As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit Duty Control Managers, on a full-time, permanent basis, based in Rugby.

Please note we will accept candidates that live within a 60-minute radius of Rugby station.

We are expanding our Control Team at Rugby, with an exciting opportunity to be the heartbeat that keeps our Trains running. Controllers are responsible for monitoring our train services, minimise the impact when things do go wrong, and supporting our 85,000 LNR passengers get to where they need to be every day.

What you'll do...

The WMT Control based in Rugby ROC is the lifeblood of our West Coast services, responsible for keeping our trains and timetable on track 7 days a week. Our Control Team is made up of a variety of roles, each with specific functions and responsibility. We are recruiting for a number of people to join our fantastic Team, including Duty Control Managers.

Duty Control Managers manage the Control Team on a daily basis, taking lead during disruption, and ensuring safety is the no.1 priority in emergency situations. The DCM acts a crucial link between Control and updating the rest of the business, especially during times of disruption on the network.

The DCM is safety focused, ensuring compliance to the correct safety policies and procedures, and supervises and supports the Control Team in day-to-day tasks. This role also is crucial in monitoring and reporting on incidents and performance to the wider business, by providing operational information to key WMT management.

How you'll work...

Our DCMs work a varied shift pattern, including weekends and bank holidays, based on Day/Night 12hr shifts. However, in return we support a great work/life balance, and our staff really value the time this gives them outside of work- being able to switch off the moment they finish their shift, to focus on spending time with family, friends, and doing the things they love.

Being in Control is about keeping a cool head when working under pressure, using all the information available to find the best course of action. You'll be working as part of a vibrant team, so being a Team player is crucial for all of these roles, to achieve the exceptionally high standards we set ourselves, and importantly doing the best we can for our passengers.

What skills and experience do I need to do the job?

Essential-

  • Able to understand and absorb substantial amounts of information quickly and accurately, and seek appropriate action to deliver realistic solutions
  • Experience of managing complex tasks with attention to detail
  • Excellent analytical skills, methodical and logical approach
  • Ability to cope well under pressure and make decisions quickly
  • Excellent team-working, and the ability to contribute towards a positive team dynamic
  • Leadership skills- manage, support and guide others
  • Previous experience of following set regulations or operating procedures
  • Experience of working in a Safety based environment or culture
  • Good working knowledge of Word, Excel, web-based systems
  • Performance minded- able to identify trends and risks
  • An excellent communicator at all levels- from working with Emergency Services to briefing senior management staff

Desirable-

  • Good knowledge of West Midlands Trains operations and areas of functional responsibility
  • A minimum of two years Control experience within a Train Operating Company or Network Rail control office
  • Holder of A1 qualification or equivalent
  • Holder of V1 qualification beneficial
  • Appreciation of Rail based policy and procedures
  • Experience of a 'Control Centre' or Emergency Response type role
  • Access to your own transport is desirable but not essential.
