KPMG's national Innovation Reliefs & Incentives ("IRI") team is made up of tax, engineering, science, and technology specialists delivering expert advice to a broad range of clients across almost every industry sector. As one of the largest teams in the industry, our continued investment in innovation advisory means that we seek technology specialists to join us on the next exciting phase of our growth.

Our team works with clients from owner managed businesses, to large multinational organisations, and we are looking for a Director with a strong information technology background to assist clients across a suite of innovation advisory services including R&D tax credits, Patent Box, R&D Allowances and Grants.

Role and Responsibilities:

This Director level role is for a specialist with an information technology background with extensive experience in the application and operation of the UK R&D Tax Incentives regime. We are specifically seeking an individual that has a proven track record working with some of the UK's largest companies from a wide and diverse range of industries in which our clients operate.

You will also be required to:

  • Lead engagement teams and develop robust claim methodologies to support R&D Tax Incentive claims that will be submitted to HMRC. This will include managing the overall client engagement, identifying and mitigating any inherent risks and overseeing the technical and costing aspects.
  • Work with our clients' engineering/technology and tax/financial teams to prepare and submit robust R&D Tax Incentive claims.
  • Review documentation to support the R&D Tax Incentive claims, including technical descriptions of our clients' R&D activities along with complex calculations supporting the quantification of the qualifying expenditure in accordance with the tax legislation.
  • Work with our client service and delivery teams to respond to HMRC enquiries into R&D Tax Incentive claims.
  • Establish and maintain strong business relationships with both existing and new clients.
  • Contribute to the leadership of the team, including team recruitment, mentoring and training along with development of our operational practices.
  • Lead business development initiatives, identify new opportunities for claims for R&D Tax Incentives (as well as Patent Box, Grants and Capital Allowances), and pitch for work with both new and existing clients, potentially both domestically and internationally.
  • Build an internal network within the wider tax and advisory practices of our firm, and in our global networks, to identify wider opportunities to help our clients.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in R&D Tax Incentives, with a background in information technology.
  • Extensive experience of leading engagement teams and developing methodologies to support successful R&D Tax Incentive claims that will be submitted to HMRC across multiple sectors.
  • Strong attention to detail, to enable you to review complex technical information before submission to the client and/or HMRC, whilst maintaining an overall strategic and customer service focused perspective, for all deliverables we produce for our clients.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to quickly adapt to a range of situations and audiences from both written and oral perspectives.
  • Experience providing clear and constructive guidance to the teams with which you work to ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality work to our clients and HMRC.
  • Experience working collaboratively within different multi-disciplinary teams whilst being focussed on delivering excellent outcomes to a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent internal networking skills with the ability to communicate with other Managers, Senior Managers, Directors and Partners confidently and knowledgably within our professional services environment.
  • Strong business development and client facing skills with a proven history of being able to identify and convert R&D Tax Incentive opportunities.
  • Knowledge of wider innovation incentive regimes (e.g. Patent Box, Grants and/or Capital Allowances) would be advantageous.
