Job overview

Job Title: Director of Medical Education (DME)

Hours per week: Part Time - 3 sessions per week (flexible according to service needs and external meetings)

Perm/Fixed Term: Fixed Term - 3 years (renewable for a second term subject to meeting objectives and a satisfactory annual performance review)

Salary: £105,504 - £139,882 Consultant/SAS pro rata 3 PA on current salary scale

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for ensuring that all medical learners at the George Eliot Hospital (GEH) NHS Trust have a positive, rewarding and meaningful educational experience. The DME's role is to empower and enable the wider education team, clinical and non-clinical, to support our learners to have the best educational experience possible.
  • Provide leadership, strategic direction and vision for the assurance, management and delivery of postgraduate and undergraduate medical education in GEH.
  • Responsible for the quality of the learning environment provided by the LEP for medical learners defined within their role. The DME works with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Chief People Officer (CPO) to develop effective medical workforce plans.

Appointments/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Full registration with a licence to practice with the GMC
  • Appointment as a consultant/SAS/ GP/Dentist (min. 5PA clinical contract)
  • Recognised as a GMC educational supervisor

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in the current appointment
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education, leadership or management
  • Experience in a senior education role e.g. specialty tutor, TPD, dept. educational lead

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience in a medical education role, either at postgraduate or undergraduate level

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in medical leadership or management.
  • Experience as a medical appraiser

Teamwork

Essential criteria

  • Leading diverse teams and taking responsibility to deliver results

Desirable criteria

  • Team or service-based Quality Improvement work as a project or part of a programme

Communication

Essential criteria

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with difficult situations
  • Evidence of supporting junior staff and colleagues

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of relevant audit, research and/or publications in education

Management

Essential criteria

  • Experience of providing pastoral support to medical learners
  • Evidence of good organisational and leadership skills
  • Evidence of contribution to quality improvement and service development

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of experience at strategic level of national and/or international education organisations
  • Experience of line management of medical and non-medical staff
  • Experience of managing a budget

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Experience of teaching and training e.g. medical learners, healthcare disciplines and allied health professionals

Personal

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of personal development

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of continued learning and personal development in medical education
