The Postholder will provide the Board with financial advice to ensure the effective planning and use of resources, and as an executive board member, the Director of Finance will contribute to the wider strategy, performance and development of the Trust. They will be a key member of the Leadership team and will have the ability to build credibility with and influence, inspire & encourage colleagues across the Trust and across our systems and partners.

Main duties of the job

The Director of Finance is accountable to the Chief Executive and is a full executive member of the Board. The post holder ensures the Trust has an effective financial strategy and has the organisational responsibility for delivering this strategy through effective and professional financial management arrangements, strong governance, and strong relationships both internally and externally.

The post holder will provide the Board with financial advice to ensure the effective planning and use of resources, and as an executive board member, the Director of Finance will contribute to the wider strategy, performance and development of the Trust.

The Director of Finance will be a key member of the Leadership team, and will have the ability to build credibility with and influence, inspire and encourage colleagues across the Trust and across our systems and partners.

They will be a visible leader for our 5,000+ colleagues and demonstrate a personal commitment to our organisational values.

They will demonstrate their commitment to working in partnership and have a dynamic leadership role in multiple integrated care systems.

Responsible for financial performance and the systems in place to ensure effective planning, monitoring, and delivery of financial plans, including the financial delivery of the capital programme

Lead organisational responsibility for internal audit, counter fraud, and procurement services, and key liaison with External Audit colleagues

Provision of statutory and regulatory financial information and accounts as required, across the Trust, our subsidiary, and our charity

Oversee all financial systems, controls, and policies, and ensure that these are developed as appropriate

Lead the development of the Trust financial strategy and ensure annual financial plans are aligned externally and internally with operational and workforce plans

Lead, influence, and support colleagues to improve productivity and use of resources

Advise the Board and Leadership team on all aspects of financial management, and provide relevant information to support this

Ensure capital funds are identified, deployed and managed effectively

Professional leadership to the finance function, and support staff development

  • Qualified accountant (CCAB or equivalent)
  • Evidence of continued personal and professional development

Experience and Attributes

Essential

  • Operated at a senior/Executive level within an NHS organisation or within a large public or private organisation
  • A successful track record of leadership and delivering results within an NHS organisation or a complex organisation relevant to an NHS Foundation Trust
  • Evidence of working as part of a senior team to deliver collective financial, performance, quality, and workforce objectives
  • Demonstrable experience of ensuring organisational wide financial governance standards, financial controls and improvement involving considerable resources and budgets
  • Proven track record of positive system and partnership working across health and care sectors that has improved the use of resources for patient and population benefit
  • Personal credibility within the 'provider' landscape and across multiple Integrated Care Systems
  • Knowledge of current issues, challenges and opportunities within the NHS; particularly in the areas of the North East and Yorkshire
  • Experience of leading on and delivering significant productivity improvements
  • Recent evidence of securing new contracts/delivering business growth
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to engaging colleagues and partners in developing financial strategy and operational plans, and in ensuring delivery
  • Evidence of improving financial performance across multi professional groups
