Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder holds full accountability for charity strategy, income generation, governance, financial performance, risk management and organisational effectiveness. The role leads the development and delivery of a multi-year transformational growth strategy, with responsibility for increasing annual charitable income to £5m+ over the next 3-5 years, positioning Leicester Hospitals Charity as a high-performing NHS charity with regional and national credibility.

Operating with a high degree of autonomy within agreed governance frameworks, the Director of Charity acts as the Trust's senior charity specialist and principal advisor to the Charitable Funds Committee and Trustees. The postholder provides visible, inclusive and compassionate leadership to a multi-disciplinary team across fundraising, finance, marketing and operations, embedding a high-performance, donor-centric and values-led culture.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree or equivalent senior leadership experience
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising (CIOF) or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant senior leadership experience within a charity or not-for-profit organisation
  • Proven track record of developing and delivering fundraising or income growth strategies
  • Experience of governance, risk management and financial oversight
  • Experience of leading and developing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience of working with Trustees or Board-level committees

Desirable criteria

  • Experience within an NHS or healthcare environment
  • Experience of major gifts, legacies or capital campaigns

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to engage, influence and build credibility with senior stakeholders, donors and partners
  • Manage and discuss highly confidential, sensitive or contentious information

  • Strategic and commercial thinking. Ability to apply appropriate judgement when considering options where all the information may not be available.

  • Experience using CRM or fundraising systems

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.

COVID 19 Risk Assessment

Due to the current Covid pandemic we have introduced a staff risk assessment into our pre-employment process. This now forms part of the mandatory pre-employment checks that will be carried out if you receive a conditional offer.
