Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Understanding the Trust and Digital's organisational goals. Getting up to speed by understanding the organisation's overall goals and objectives. Identifying the key priorities and strategic initiatives that align with these goals to ensure alignment benefits management with the Trust's strategic direction.

Building awareness and buy-in. Educating stakeholders, including senior management, project teams, and relevant staff, about the concept and importance of benefits management. Highlighting how it can improve project success and contribute to the organisation's success. Including developing and maintaining effective networks and relationships with internal and external contacts and stakeholders.

Developing the benefits management framework. Creating a benefits management framework tailored to the organisation's needs and projects. The framework should outline the processes, roles, responsibilities, and tools for identifying, planning, tracking, and evaluating benefits. Includes considering how best practice from national guidance and blueprinting might be implemented across our programmes, and presenting findings to the relevant Digital portfolio and programme boards to support informed decision-making.

Identification and prioritisation of benefits. Working with project teams and stakeholders to identify and prioritise the benefits associated with each project or initiative. Clearly defining what success looks like for each benefit and linking them to our strategic goals. Including:
• Developing a high-level plan for the realisation of quality and financial benefits which supports the Trust's strategic objectives.
• Leading and contributing to the identification and validation of benefits for the digital portfolio.
• Identification of benefits related risks and take appropriate steps to help benefit owners to appropriately control and mitigate those risks.

Alignment with portfolio project lifecycle. Integrating benefits management activities into the digital portfolio project lifecycle, ensuring that benefits are considered throughout the project, from planning to delivery and beyond. Including proactively monitoring delivery of/planning for delivery of benefits during all project phases.

Establishment of metrics and measures. Defining clear and measurable metrics for each benefit to track progress and success. These metrics will be realistic, achievable, and relevant to each programme's objectives.

Development of benefits realisation plans. Creating specific plans for realising each benefit, outlining the necessary actions, resources, and timelines to achieve them. Including:
• Holding overall accountability for monitoring the scope and progress of the benefits against the benefits realisation plan; reporting progress and expectations to the programme board.
• Initiating, arranging, chairing or participating in meetings between digital portfolio colleagues and suppliers to discuss and resolve areas of benefits concern.
• Tracking and recording the achievement of benefits with programme and project managers across the digital portfolio.
• Using relevant knowledge and experience to guide benefits planning and realisation.
• Supporting business analysts as they review and design As-Is and To-Be states, to aide development of benefits realisation plans.

Monitoring and reporting. Setting up a system for monitoring and reporting on benefits realisation regularly in according with Trust and NHS England requirements, allowing assessment of progress, identification of issues, and making timely adjustments as necessary. Including:
• Advising and provide recommendations to programme and project boards on benefits and their realisation.
• Leading on reporting benefits to external partners and governing bodies.

Regularly undertaking surveys, audits and research to support the monitoring and implementation of benefits and corresponding realisation plans.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Undergraduate degree in business management or equivalent.

Desirable criteria

  • Postgraduate degree - business management or equivalent.
  • APMG International® Managing Benefits certified.
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner.
  • MSP Foundation.
  • ITIL Foundation.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Developing and implementing benefits management strategy and frameworks.
  • Integrating benefits management activities into the project lifecycle, such that benefits have been considered throughout the project, from planning to delivery and beyond.
  • Defining clear and measurable metrics for benefits to track progress and success that have been realistic, achievable, and relevant to the organisation's objectives.
  • Creating specific plans for realising benefits, which outline the necessary actions, resources, and timelines to achieve them.
  • Setting up systems for monitoring and reporting on benefits realisation regularly that allows organisations to assess progress, identify issues, and make timely adjustments.
  • Providing training and support to stakeholders on benefits management processes and tools, where everyone involved understands their roles and responsibilities.

Desirable criteria

  • Benefits management experience applied to healthcare (acute) and/or digital environments.
  • Digital transformation project or programme management.
  • PMO management or analyst experience.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Understanding how key priorities and strategic initiatives that align with an organisation's overall goals and objectives, align benefits management with an organisation's broader vision.
  • Able to create benefits management frameworks for portfolios, that includes outline processes, roles, responsibilities and tools for identifying, planning, tracking, and evaluating benefits.
  • Able to influence and educate Trust stakeholders about the concepts and importance of benefits management.

Desirable criteria

  • Digital department functions and/or capabilities in acute healthcare.
  • InPhase risk and incident management system.
