Design Manager, Supercharger Infrastructure UK & Ireland

The Role
With 50,000+ Superchargers, Tesla owns and operates the largest global, fast charging network in the world. Located on major routes near convenient amenities, Superchargers keep our customers charged when they are away from home.

As we continue to expand our charging network, we are hiring a Design Manager who will play a key role within the in the delivery of Supercharger locations in the UK & Ireland. You will be supporting the pace of rollout, overseeing the integration of design concepts with construction processes, taking responsibility for developing technical specifications, and managing the design process from tender stage to handover.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all phases of project delivery from concept site design stage through to construction-ready, including due diligence, site design, electrical design and planning for Supercharger stations in the UK & Ireland.
  • Oversee the design of technical drawings, including HV electrical designs to be approved by the DNO/IDNO, including power cable systems (11-33kV), Point Of Connection (POC), earthing, protection & controls.
  • Produce and maintain construction ready site designs that align with Tesla design principles to deliver a market leading customer experience.
  • Develop a detailed design programme with all relevant parties to satisfy design, procurement and construction requirements.
  • Reviewing and commenting on designs for completeness, buildability, potential quality issues, potential lead time problems, scope packaging and other similar issues in conjunction with the Tesla project team.
  • Chairing co-ordination meetings with sub-contractors during design development.
  • Chairing / attending regular internal design meetings at which all new drawings, design team and contractors, are reviewed and marked up with members of the Tesla project team.
  • Manage DNO/ IDNO, ICPs and contractors for delivery schemes.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the various cross-functional teams to ensure overall program alignment and execution.
  • Assisting the construction managers in all design issues as and when required.
  • Assisting the construction managers in the audit and quality control of contractor works against the designs.
  • Develop and implement the design and document control systems & processes. Including managing the RFI and NCR process.
  • Ensuring designs are compliant with statutory requirements and applicable standards.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of Design Management experience
  • Established record of accomplishment managing and delivering multiple simultaneous projects ahead of schedule while adhering to the highest quality and standards
  • Ability to function autonomously, working independent of a support staff, without formal requirements documentation, in a fast-paced environment; ability to manage changing priorities.
  • Entrepreneurial approach to accomplishing tasks with far fewer resources than a big company would have.
  • Self-starter approach to challenging the status quo; innovative ideas that improve our: designs, processes, assemblies, costs, or the company as a whole.
  • Ability to identify the critical path issues and institute remedies that shorten that critical path.
  • Ability to travel (2-3 days per week).

Preferable:

  • Working knowledge of grid connections, high voltage (11-33kV), NERS & engineering design, although not a requirement
  • Skilled in reading, understanding and redlining construction drawings, including utility designs and power distribution details. Accountable to cost implications of construction design options and able to make cost-efficiency recommendations.
  • Basic CAD proficiency for drafting site layouts / CD30s
  • Aptitude in communicating and building relationships with DNO/IDNOs, contractors and other stakeholders throughout the project cycle
