The Deputy Service Manager is responsible for the provision of the core Chemistry laboratory service of the Blood Sciences service at both main NUH sites (QMC and City Hospital).

Dealing with operational management of service delivery and staffing issues, the post holder will be the professional head of biomedical scientists and support staff working within Routine Chemistry and will ensure appropriate staffing levels, grading, skill mix, equipment, training and work practises within the department to ensure maintenance of quality standards required for accreditation and good laboratory practice.

The post holder will work closely with the DSM for Specialist Chemistry and the Consultant Clinical Scientist lead for Autocore.

The laboratory service is fully accredited to UKAS 15189;2022 standards and is accredited as a training laboratory for IBMS portfolios.

The laboratory will be finalising an IT refresh in Summer 2025, moving from Winpath V5 to Winpath Enterprise.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • State Registered BMS (HCPC) with Fellowship of IBMS
  • MSc Postgraduate Qualification (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of higher specialist training in appropriate area, gained through short courses or distance learning
  • Evidence of formal management training/recognised management qualification
  • Demonstration of a commitment to continuing education and training

Desirable criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification in other specialisation
  • Good working knowledge of specialist areas other than own and how this an be integrated to improve service

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of managing and leading a significant section within a service, with a significant number of line reports
  • Significant experience of effectively managing day to day HR processes
  • Able to demonstrate strong leadership ability and organisational skills
  • Ability to undertake effective change management and planning
  • Awareness of national and local Pathology and NHS agendas
  • Up to date knowledge and experience of a wide range of laboratory processes
  • Awareness of technological solutions and their application
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of financial management and budgetary control

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Able to provide and receive highly complex information
  • Possess well-developed influencing and motivational skills
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff at all levels

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

The system will run a check against the key security features within your documentation. The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£49.50 for enhanced and £21.50 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month's pay).
