Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Deputy Head of Service to lead the operational laboratory service at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital. The laboratory is a centre of excellence across the 2 sites, for Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Haemostasis disorders, Clinical Biochemistry including Automation, Specialist metabolic and Immunochemistry services.

This is an exciting time to work at UHBW as part of the West of England network and the successful applicant can look forward to driving change and to make an impact on services in the future.

We will also be implementing new technology within the laboratory as part of the Managed Services Contract for the WoE network.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead the operational management of the UHBW Laboratory Service across the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital.

The post holder will work with the Head of Service and Section Leads, across the range of laboratory services, to ensure operational targets are met.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • HCPC Registration as a BMS
  • BSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science
  • MSc
  • Evidence of CPD

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in Management / leadership qualification

Skills and Abilities

  • Able to promote a high performance culture, whilst coaching and empowering others
  • Challenges conflict where this is impacting on service delivery or standards and help to broker agreements
  • Able to use influencing strategies to bring about substantial change, including user involvement
  • Able to set and meet challenging goals, applying measures to track and quantify achievement
  • Excellent communication skills

  • Operational experience in an NHS laboratory
  • Graduate level of education and postgraduate level professional practice and written communication skills

  • Experience of laboratory computer systems
  • Understanding of the critical importance of confidentiality
  • Experience of document management systems (e.g. Q-Pulse)
  • Management experience at operational level, involving evidence of ability to meet targets, achieve service performance improvements and positive outcomes for users
  • Evidence of successful working with teams, including clinical and non-clinical staff
