About the role

The Deputy Business Manager will ensure the smooth management of business operations. In this role, you will work closely with the Business Manager to ensure the effective implementation of business strategies, goals, and objectives, while overseeing a wide range of operational, financial, and team-related responsibilities.

You will be a key leading member of the Business Support Team with line management responsibility for the Business Support Officer and Executive Assistant.

You will co-ordinate and contribute to the smooth running of the business support administration function.

The role encompasses the following areas:

  • Line management of the Business Support team, with overall responsibility for all areas delivered by the team.
  • Departmental business reporting, including data collection and analysis on staffing, resourcing, equality & diversity, and recruitment activity.
  • Overseeing internal departmental communications, including drafting of communications.
  • Assisting in budgeting, financial reporting, and analysis to ensure financial targets are met.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of King's Digital strategies, goals, and objectives.
  • Implementing operational policies and procedures to ensure effective business operations.
  • Deputising for the Business Manager when required.
  • Supporting production, student support, and operations teams with their quarterly risk registers, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated.
  • Leading on Health & Safety initiatives and ensuring college policies are implemented at a local level.
  • Responsible for and overseeing King's Digital space management, including moves, refurbishments and minor works, purchase of furniture and equipment, management of budget for refurbishment.
  • Act as a point of liaison with Estates on behalf of King's Digital.

The role is primarily based at JCMB on the King's Waterloo Campus though you may be required to travel to other campuses on occasion. King's has a hybrid working scheme where staff may be able to work remotely for part of the week, as determined by required output and departmental need.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

Excellent numerical and data management skills, with great attention to detail

  1. Experience of administration, including managing budgets and other resources, preferably in an academic environment
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrable experience dealing with a wide variety of people and levels of seniority.
  3. Computer literate with demonstrable experience using advanced functions in Excel (e.g. Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, INDEX) and Power BI or other analytics tools
  4. Advanced organisational skills with excellent planning and prioritising skills
  5. Experience of line management or supervising multiple team members with demonstrable ability to manage performance and capacity of direct reports
  6. Ability to influence others and contribute proactively to the department with a 'hands on' approach to working
  7. Ability to balance competing priorities under pressure of deadlines and workload and ability to take on new tasks with minimal supervision
  8. Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

Desirable criteria

  1. Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  2. Experience working in Higher Education, research, academic, or other non-profit sectors
