NatCen's Data Management team is recruiting for a Data Manager. The Data Management team assist our research projects by supporting the data in terms of data quality and timeliness, to enable the research teams and statisticians on our research projects.

The Data Manager will use applications like SPSS, to collect the data from several sources, and transform and merge the data sets into consolidated data quality validated data set(s) as required by the research teams.

This Data Manager role will suit candidates with good (data) logic and research data lifecycle knowledge, and ideally with experience of tools like SPSS and MS Excel to enable quick facilitation of data sets for the research teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain SPSS data files.
  • Check and edit data, ensuring data integrity and continuity.
  • Write derived variables in SPSS, in conjunction with the research team.
  • Provision of data sets to internal and external users (including Data Archive), and keeping archived data sets up-to-date (e.g. with flagged data).
  • Carry out, and validate, data linkages (e.g. with Census data, administrative data, different datasets over time or from different surveys).
  • Carry out cross-tabulation and other statistical analyses.
  • Contribute to substantive and technical reports.
  • Ensure all procedures and questionnaires are fully documented.
  • Be the main contact for data queries and enquiries for NatCen researchers, other NatCen staff, customers, collaborators and external data users.
  • Be aware of data protection and confidentiality issues.
  • Miscellaneous tasks (e.g. sorting out samples or feed forward data for follow-up studies).

To perform any other reasonable duties that NatCen may require that are consistent with the broad nature of the job.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential:

  • Undergraduate degree.
  • Experience of data management.
  • Experience of statistical software (e.g. SPSS or STATA) or programming.
  • Good numeracy and IT skills.
  • Good communication skills (written and oral).
  • Organisation and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to manage deadlines.

Desirable:
• Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject.
