What you’ll be doing:
- Leading, overseeing and facilitating all R&D activities involving universities and catapult centres (research institutes), maximising them and ensuring that they run smoothly and efficiently
- With a deep understanding of the funding opportunities, contracting methods, partnership opportunities, ways of working and the different skills each institute possesses, you will be actively working with internal technical leads to understand their problems, advising them on how best the research institutes could be used to tackle them, facilitate connections, set up the initiatives, and help deliver them
- Act as the key point of contact for all collaboration and communication activities relating to R&D with the research institutes, between us and the research institutes, other BAE business units and BAE Head Office
- Establishing the landscape of expertise and facilities available across the research institutes and mapping them to the business’s skills and problems to help the identification of solutions and opportunities
- Supporting the creation of the business’s technology strategy with insights into how best to utilise the research institutes to address the business and programme / product problems
- Leading the strategic relationships with the research institute’s management, professors and sponsored students
- Identifying, encouraging and facilitating BAE intellectual property exploitation opportunities with the research institutes
Your skills and experiences:
- Management of engineering projects involving research and the introduction of new technologies
- Experience working with, securing funding and running projects with universities and Catapult centres
- An engineering background with business development experience
- Leadership & good communication/relationship building skills
- STEM-related degree or equivalent experience
- The ability to develop and manage relationships across a wide variety of organisations and disciplines
- The ability to understand and clearly communicate engineering and manufacturing problems and technical solutions to technical leads within the business and within the research institutes

The Technology Strategy & Value team:
This Engineering Manager role lies within the Strategy & Value section of the Technology Management team. The Technology Management team manages and governs the R&D budgets and all associated projects undertaken across the business and programmes.
The Technology Strategy team supports the Technology Management team members along with the wider R&D community with guidance, advice, removing blockers and managing stakeholders. The Strategy & Value team are responsible for authoring and implementing the BAE Systems – Submarines Technology Strategy. This involves identifying business challenges and opportunities, and the key technologies that could address them, then coordinating and facilitating the R&D activities to mature those technologies utilising the wider enterprise and partners where possible. The team also oversee intellectual property protection and exploitation.
The freedom to manage the majority of your own schedule. This role will involve a significant amount of travel to visit the research institutes throughout the country and to build the network and relationships needed for a successful working relationship. A company car allowance will be provided to support travel to the research institute partners located throughout the country.
