Location: Newcastle (hybrid working - 2 days in the office)

Reports to: Head of Compliance

The Role

Sitting within the first line of defence, this pivotal position operates within our general insurance environment, helping the business manage compliance risks, maintain regulatory standards and providing guidance on data protection matters.

Partnering closely with teams across the business including sales, operations and product, as well as the second line of defence, the Compliance Manager will provide practical guidance and hands-on support to help identify and manage compliance risks early. With a focus on delivering good outcomes for customers while supporting business growth, the Compliance Manager will foster a culture where compliance and commerciality work hand in hand.

What you'll be doing

  • Building strong, collaborative relationships across the business to embed compliance into day-to-day activities
  • Supervising a small team of Compliance Monitoring Assistants, overseeing QA monitoring of Telesales activity and ensuring accurate, timely reporting
  • Managing data protection queries and individual rights requests
  • Overseeing FCA-regulated complaint handling to ensure fair and compliant outcomes
  • Reviewing and approving financial promotions to ensure they are clear, fair and compliant with FCA rules
  • Preparing Board and governance reports, providing senior leaders with insight into compliance performance, emerging risks and Consumer Duty outcomes
  • Reviewing incentive and commission structures to ensure fairness and regulatory compliance
  • Collaborating with external parties to support thematic reviews, audits and deep-dives, while tracking and facilitating completion of identified actions
  • Conducting regular horizon scanning to identify emerging risks and potential impacts on the business
  • Conducting policy gap analyses and process reviews, maintaining up to date action trackers and asset libraries
  • Working closely with key partners including insurance providers, attending governance meetings and reviewing management information to ensure supply chains are delivering good customer outcomes
  • Monitoring Appointed Representative activity
  • Providing practical compliance advice to colleagues on projects, initiatives and day-to-day queries
  • Overseeing the Training and Competence Scheme, maintaining and monitoring CPD progress
  • Regularly reviewing and updating compliance training materials to ensure they are clear, engaging and aligned with current regulations and company policies
  • Preparing and submitting FCA RegData returns and managing Connect applications

Who you are

  • Has practical experience in general insurance or broad FCA-regulated environments, with a solid understanding of compliance obligations
  • Knowledge of data protection and experience of managing a small team is advantageous but not essential
  • Can build strong, collaborative relationships across multiple teams and levels, influencing others and embedding compliance in a positive way
  • Good understanding of Consumer Duty principles
  • Is commercially minded and able to make compliance advice practical and proportionate
  • Is enthusiastic and proactive, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, able to explain complex compliance requirements in a digestible way
  • Has attention to detail and the ability to spot potential risks early
  • Thrives in a hands-on, dynamic environment, able to switch between operational tasks and projects

Please note, this role is FCA regulated and as such the successful candidate will be required to undergo a DBS and credit check prior to offer.
