Detailed job description and main responsibilities

BOUNDARIES OF THE ROLE
• Volunteers must not give out personal contact details (phone numbers, social media, email etc.) or promote their private practice through their volunteering role
• Volunteers must have a good understanding of boundaries and be able to work within the boundaries of this role
• Therapists must only practice the therapy/therapies that a) they are qualified and registered in and b) that they have agreed with their complementary therapy supervisor(s) that they will offer at UCLH and c) using techniques and oils agreed and appropriate to use within this setting
• Therapists must not offer advice or recommendations for which they are not qualified or which could fall outside the scope of evidence based practice/recommendations appropriate to an NHS setting
• If in any doubt, appropriate boundaries of practice, advice or conversation should be discussed with the complementary therapy supervisor(s)

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE ROLE
• NHS mandatory training covering core healthcare knowledge and skills such as infection control, information governance, fire training, safeguarding
• Specialist induction training, provided by the Macmillan Support and Information Complementary Therapy Team and where appropriate the wider Macmillan Support and Information team. This will cover adaptations to the additional specialist needs of our patient groups for the therapy/therapies that will be offered, including essential oil safety in a cancer care setting, assessing needs and safety considerations, an introduction to clinical record keeping and data collection, and infection control procedures for complementary therapists including under covid,
• On-going support and development as agreed with the complementary therapy team
• Over time, as the volunteer service within this team develops, the potential to connect with other complementary therapy volunteers
• Access to Macmillan Support and Information research forum
• Volunteer complementary therapists will be provided with written training material to support their specialist induction training with the service

EXPECTATIONS OF LOCAL STAFF
• New volunteers will be given an induction to the local team including meeting key individuals, better understanding your patients' needs and local procedures e.g. around infection control and fire training
• Staff will help volunteers feel part of the team and embody the UCLH Values

ADDITONAL EXPECTATIONS OF SUPERVISING STAFF FOR THIS SPECIALIST VOLUTEERING ROLE
• Volunteers will be given regular opportunities to gain support and supervision from their complementary therapy supervisor in order to maximise the effectiveness of their clinical practice and their own learning and development.

OTHER
• To be able to meet the minimum commitment periods for the role. We invest time and resources into your specialist induction training and your development. If the minimum time commitment for volunteering is not met, this takes the time and resources that we invested in you away from our high need and vulnerable patient group.

• All volunteers must be aged 18 or over with a good command of the English language
• All volunteers to wear the UCLH volunteer polo shirt
• References (on request, after 6 months/half the minimum volunteering period)
• Out of pocket expenses are covered in line with our policy (currently travel is covered to the value of £10 per day and meal expense of £4.50 per day)

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
