About the role:

In this newly created role you will help raise our profile so that more people and organisations can benefit from our educational opportunities, research and ideas.

You will build relationships across the business school to find the most exciting research and most inspirational student and alumni stories and share them more widely, especially through the media. You'll be taking ideas from start to finish, setting goals, measuring success and evaluating their impact.

The successful candidate will be a great communicator with both creativity and intellectual curiosity. You will have experience as a journalist or communications professional and will be comfortable developing and executing communications plans.

You will be part of a friendly and dynamic External Engagement team and will have plenty of opportunity to broaden and develop your professional and technical skills.

Key responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with the Head of Communications, academics, the King's Corporate Communications team and other key stakeholders to identify and disseminate compelling stories about our community's activities, achievement and research and publish them on our website where relevant.
  • Keep a close eye on the news agenda to identify and act on opportunities for King's Business School and developing and maintain relationships with key journalists.
  • Write and edit news articles, features, blogs, award entries and other promotional materials that highlight the school's strengths and initiatives.
  • Work with the King's Corporate Communications team and the Business School's PR agency when needed.
  • Take the lead in working with our communications coordinator and social media officer to ensure that news stories are shared across our website, social media and internal communications platforms. This will also include providing and posting content, depending on requirements.
  • Work with our Student Experience team to advise on communications to students where appropriate
  • Contribute to our reputation monitoring and management.
  • Contribute to our data collection and reporting and use analytics to assess the effectiveness of communications strategies and adjust as needed.
  • Work with the Business School's social media officer and colleagues across King's to contribute to university-wide campaigns and make the most of our wider network to get our stories to a wider audience.
  • Help manage the communications team's shared resources, planning and budgets.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of faculty expertise to effectively match researchers with media opportunities.
  • Provide basic skills training to our academics and help prepare them for media appearances as required.
  • Step in for the Faculty Head of Communications when required
  • Support other communications and engagement activities as required

About You:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience in journalism, media relations or communications.

2. Excellent command of the English language and confident in communicating complex ideas, both in written and verbal formats.

3. A proven ability to develop and pitch stories gained either in journalism or in a communications role.

4. Experience in writing engaging content for digital platforms (including websites and social media) while maintaining factual accuracy and nuance.

5. Collaborative and strategic mindset with the ability to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders, understand their goals and work effectively with them and others to achieve them.

6. A sound understanding of EDI issues and how they relate to higher education and to communications in particular.

7. Intellectual curiosity and a demonstrable interest in current affairs, business and economics.

Desirable criteria

1. A professional qualification in journalism, communications, or PR.

2. Knowledge of and experience in the higher education sector or other high profile context.

3. Experience of social media management and content creation.

4. Additional technical skills such as video or podcast creation or a track record of acquiring new skills.
