Commercial Content Director
Department: Content Editorial & Research
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: London
Reporting To: Clare Bolton
Description
We do commercial content differently - for us, it is high-level substantive content so good it supports subscription revenue, but which generates an audience so significant that external experts pay us to access it by authoring content for us. We're looking for a strategic content leader able to source, shape and deliver this content set, which is critical to our growth as a business.
We're a fast-paced, high-growth organisation which is the proud owner of a series of platforms well-inserted into niche markets, each with a committed and growing audience. We're looking for someone who knows good content, but who also understands why our clients partner with us to achieve their own business development goals; and who can use that knowledge to both grow and improve our commercial content set.
The Role
Our commercial content function designs and delivers high-quality substantive legal content written by external experts, who derive value from accessing our specialist, high-value audiences for their content, in order to showcase their expertise. Current products in the portfolio include Lexology's Panoramic and In-Depth, and Insight content sets across our specialist platforms, including Global Arbitration Review, IAM and Global Competition Review.
The Commercial Content Director develops, implements and delivers a commercial content strategy which supports growth of portfolio revenue, by ensuring quality of content sets and author experience; by provisioning high-quality and efficient delivery of products; and by originating ideas for content products across platforms.
- Develop and deliver a global, multi-platform commercial content strategy, working closely with key stakeholders to align with business objectives. Within that strategy, ensure the portfolio aligns with both user need and commercial opportunity, including leading on new content (both topics within existing products, and new product ideas). Work with the Chief Content Officer to ensure that strategy aligns with the divisional and group content strategy.
- Manage a high-performing team of content, development and commercial editors, recruiting and retaining the right talent and providing guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure high-quality, market-appropriate output which meets audience need.
- Work with subject-matter experts within the content function to ensure content strategy and contributor profile benefits from their knowledge, expertise and contact network.
- Partner closely with commercial leads to ensure the portfolio is optimised to meet business goals, while balancing content imperatives such as quality and user requirements.
- Rightsource resourcing requirements for strategy delivery between onshore, freelance and offshore teams. Drive a 'one team' approach irrespective of location to ensure maximum quality for maximum efficiency.
- Own the content quality from start to finish, from idea to front-end to distribution, and ensure content sets meet the product and brand proposition - from the strategic level to line-by-line.
- Deliver our commercial content on time, and on revenue target, across the portfolio.
- Deliver content output on cost budget as per annual P&L.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, editorial, and product development, to ensure cohesive content delivery.
- Be at the forefront of technological development in the space, including AI, and ensure the team are continuously improving their usage of tech to drive both efficiency and quality. Build a culture of innovation and improvement in tech implementation in the team.
- Constantly drive improvements in the workflow and efficiency in the delivery process to support margin growth in the content set.
- Monitor legal industry trends and audience preferences to inform content strategy and identify new opportunities.
- Develop and run effective content marketing on social media and other channels to drive engagement.
- Analyse content performance metrics and use insights to optimise strategy and drive audience growth.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and content trends, exploring innovative ways to enhance the content delivery and user experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Our ideal candidate is someone with:
- Experience running large, multi-functional content teams;
- A keen commercial nous and understanding of why commercial content works;
- Deep editorial and language skills and an exceptional and innate sense of structure, grammar and quality;
- A legal background, training or knowledge;
- The communication skills to gain the confidence of contributors, be the link between teams, and inspire the wider division on the role of commercial content in our growth story;
- Experience managing a cost base or budget, and scaling to support growth;
- An understanding of why and how our clients use content to achieve their own business development goals.
And someone who:
- Is a proven leader of high-performing teams, able to lead through change;
- Thrives in fast-paced, high-change environments and has a relentless thirst for improvement and achievement;
- Is inspired by how tech can improve outcomes and processes, and ensures the team is using the latest technology to achieve its goals;
- Understands reader behaviour, and how to measure and influence it through quality content;
- Is not fazed by multiple deadlines;
- Passionately cares about quality but is also motivated to hit commercial targets;
- Believes that diverse teams are strong teams and works hard to strengthen the culture not only of their own team but the company overall.
