The role reports to the Group's Business Improvement Director, who reports to the COO.

Who you are?

The key purpose of the Business Improvement team is to support the COO in improving the performance of the Group through developing and leading a wide range of planning, performance improvement and commercial activities. The Group Commercial team are responsible for providing oversight of our commercial activities, to ensure consistency in how we manage our commercial relationships and, when required, to provide support to the Commercial teams working in the Operating Businesses.

As the Commercial Manager (Performance), you'll get the opportunity to:

  • Building effective working relationships with Divisional Commercial Directors, working collaboratively while also being able to hold them to account
  • Develop and implement a standard Cost & Value Reporting process for the Group, including financial recognition rules, standardised CVR templates / formats, and a well-defined review process linked to the three 'lines of defence' (Divisional, Group Commercial and Internal Audit)
  • Define and implement a consistent commercial 'RAG' report at contract-level, to give improved transparency of commercial performance across all parts of the Group
  • Lead and coordinate the development and implementation of a Business Management System covering the full commercial cycle (in effect, establishing the minimum standard for commercial processes for the Group)
  • Own and govern commercial systems and processes across the group, including leading the development of user requirements and business change requests, and working with outsourced development teams to execute systems development
  • Develop and maintain the Group Commercial Reporting Rules and Compliance Procedures
  • Develop and maintain Cost & Value Reporting (CVR) forms and ensure these are implemented consistently across all Divisions
  • Ensure robust reporting via the three lines of defences - Divisional Review Procedures; Group Commercial and Peer Reviews; and Group Internal Audit Plan and Procedures
  • Develop and implement Monthly review of Divisional Contract Performance Metrics - P&L, Cash, Commercial and Operational
  • Carry out Contract and Divisional commercial reviews and create commercial corrective actions
  • Create a flow of commercial information that flows from Contracts through to Group consolidated position
  • Hold Divisions to account against a set of Commercial Must Dos

What you'll bring?

  • Several years of experience as a Senior Commercial Manager together with good financial experience
  • Highly experienced in completing and reviewing cost and value reconciliations (likely to have commercial / quantity surveying background)
  • Extensive knowledge of value measurement approaches and accounting principles
  • Strong with stakeholders, experience of change delivery projects, able bring people 'on the journey', not afraid to challenge at a senior-level
  • Good all round project management skills
  • A good understanding of commercial and financial systems
  • Good financial experience and accounting knowledge
  • Able to capture detail behind assertions, commercial audit experience would be advantageous
  • Good communication and presentation skills; both verbal and written, with strong MS Office skills
  • Resilient, able to deal with challenge at all levels of the organisation and drive through change
  • Degree level qualification
  • Full UK driving licence / ability to work flexibly
