Cancer Patient Flow/Bed Manager

• Coordinate admissions, transfers, repatriations and discharges for all cancer inpatients patients.
• Maintain accurate and up to date records relating to all cancer elective and emergency admissions, transfer in and out, discharges, outliers and bed state - and use these records to provide oversight of the bed status daily.
• Ensure effective communications with the Trusts Operations Centre and ensure an effective collaborative relationship is established with the Co-ordination Centre to promote effective patient flow management.
• Provide cross cover for Oncology Discharge Co-ordinator when required.
• Demonstrate metrics for patient flow performance by audit and other quality assurance methods. Report performance to Onc or Haem Governance meetings as required.
• Monitor outlier numbers and clinical care of outlying cancer patients.
• Facilitate discharge processes to ensure effective, efficient and appropriate discharge in liaison Cancer Discharge Coordinator and Integrated Discharge Service (IDS), cancer and tower ward sisters.
• Ensure professional and supportive communications with the Multidisciplinary team.
• Support change management issues/projects for the service and lead as required.
• Support and promote a welcoming, caring and supportive environment is provided for staff, patients and their family/visitors/carers, working according to the Trust values.
• Uphold quality initiatives that improve 'customer care' and enhance the interface between cancer services, staff, patients and visitors and other wards and departments within the Trust.

Person specification

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register.
  • Teaching course
  • Relevant cancer specialist clinical course
  • Educated to degree level or currently completing degree

Desirable criteria

  • Recognised Leadership course
  • Advanced communications course

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Substantial relevant clinical and managerial experience
  • Proven track record of leadership

Desirable criteria

  • Demonstrable previous experience in Bed Management or equivalent experience

Communication & Customer Care

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate sensitive and complex information in an appropriate manner
  • Communicates with patients and carers in an empathetic manner

Quality and service improvement

Essential criteria

  • Ability to lead on service improvement projects
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of own importance and role in Clinical Governance and risk management
  • Evidence of involvement with audit and quality in clinical care

Information processing (IT Skills)

Essential criteria

  • Experience using spreadsheets, access, word and internet packages
