The team

One of the most successful and long-running Continuing Dramas is currently seeking a passionate and driven Camera Assistant to join their team. This is your chance to be a part of the storytelling process behind a beloved Continuing Drama that has stood the test of time. The role

You will need to have a keen passion for Continuing Drama and an enjoyment of working collaboratively with the Camera Department. As a Camera Assistant you will support the camera crew in routine operation to ensure unit efficiency and high quality output during preparation, rehearsal or transmission of the production. This will include all areas of operation including studio and location.

The responsibilities for the role are:

  • To interpret, in practical and physical terms, the smooth-running of the camera operations.
  • Understand the different requirements involved in shooting on location and in the studio environment.
  • Learning how to rig and de-rig cameras and other specialised equipment; developing the capability of patching cameras to relevant camera points.
  • Cable-clearing and camera assisting (focusing, tracking etc).
  • Acquiring basic fault-finding skills i.e. repair and first line maintenance of associated equipment (eg cable and connectors repairs and replacement).
  • Making safe at the end of day and an overall awareness of Health & Safety for the department and others.
  • Loading/unloading a Camera Van with camera equipment and driving the vehicle to and from location as required..
  • Responsible for operating a clapper-board on location.
  • Support the Grips Department with day to day tasks as required, which involves a considerable amount of manual handling. You will be expected to safely lift and carry grip equipment.
  • You will need to acquire a good understanding of production discipline and etiquette and adhere to these.
  • Develop professional discreet relationships with cast and crew.
  • Ensuring all activities are undertaken and conducted in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
  • Develop a good understanding of the creative process by observing and subsequently using this knowledge in a practical environment.

Skills you'll need (minimum criteria)...

  • You will need to have gained experience working in a technical role as a Camera Assistant or Technical Assistant , preferably on a similar drama production with a good understanding of television production processes.
  • You will need experience of duties such as: rigging and derigging camera equipment; cable-clearing; charging camera batteries and setting up monitors out on location and assisting with focusing and tracking.
  • Proven and demonstrable interest in camera and lens / lighting techniques together with basic understanding of camera mountings, dolly, track, and cranes.
  • Driving licence is required as driving duties are part of this role as you will be expected to load equipment and drive a vehicle from our studio base out to location.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and confident in liaising with various individuals and departments in a professional manner.
  • You will need to be flexible, reliable, punctual and organised. Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to have a flexible approach to work and working hours and the ability to work long hours under pressure and deliver results throughout.
  • You will be required to move, transport and rig/derig heavy equipment.
  • Full colour vision either corrected or uncorrected, ability to understand colour rendition and camera related technical issues.
  • Adherence to both studio and shoot etiquette and discipline.
  • Manual handling experience with knowledge of how to lift and carry safely.
  • High degree of diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Other things we're looking for (key criteria)...

    • Knowledge of Cameras and Technology e.g. knowledge of using P2 cards.
    • Ability to learn new techniques and technologies e.g what makes a good shot and how camera work enhances creative storytelling.
    • Good interpersonal skills include the ability to communicate effectively and take a variety of approaches when dealing with issues and problems.
    • Systematic approach to problem solving.
    • Strong organisational and time management skills.
    • Health and Safety knowledge/awareness.
    • Teamwork & Communication.
    • Proactive approach to personal development.
    • Passion for working in the industry, specifically in continuing drama.
