The role of the BUD is required to maximise potential growth, support operational change and fully utilise technical skill sets. To ensure all work carried out in the unit is done so at an optimum level of profitability and to a high level of quality, with an engaged and motivated team where individuals are given every opportunity to develop their potential. The role will require the successful candidate to work collaboratively with all key stakeholders (technical, strategic, client management, file handling, sales and operations) to successfully effect and drive change. To support changes in working practices, structure and operational model whilst delivering the highest levels of client service, results, people engagement and commerciality. To be an engaging and innovative leader.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the unit has appropriate processes in place so the quality of work delivered meets all internal and external client requirements/benchmarks, including compliance with the firm's quality management procedures
  • Assist with preparation and delivery of financial budgets,
  • Take steps to access and improve profitability and assist with all pricing opportunities and requests.
  • Successful and profitable implementation of new contracts in line with pricing calculations.
  • Develop a performance culture within the team, ensuring individuals have agreed, Objectives and KPIs and a clear focus achieving objectives and maximising performance.
  • Implement and monitor plans for smooth operation and continuous improvement of the unit
  • Embed a commercial culture within the unit which promotes a strong discipline around the speed and accuracy of management information and invoicing.
  • Ensure the unit has the appropriate resources/capacity to deal effectively & profitably with the work in the unit and to liaise with the Operations Director at least monthly to discuss any further capacity requirements
  • Ensure the unit has a comprehensive and effective programme of training, development and supervision to support induction and progression.
  • Develop and maintain career development pathways linked to salary banding competencies.
  • Deal with any complaints/handling issues in accordance with the firm's internal procedures and in conjunction with other stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the client account management team and (as required) key clients, in order to gain regular feedback on quality of service and resolve challenges quickly, in order to sustain and build work volumes
  • Provide, analyse and present accurate and timely management information, both internally and to clients, as required
  • Regularly review processes and practices within the unit to drive a culture of continuous improvement
  • Driving a consistent and effective structure of communication across the unit including regular team meetings, 1 to 1 meetings, performance reviews and career development discussions
  • Ensuring each member of the unit has a Personal Development Plan in place linked to their own career goals and chosen pathway
  • Taking steps to create an environment where a high level of morale and engagement exists and where we celebrate success
  • Taking steps to retain the best talent and to reduce attrition, sickness levels and general absence
  • Responsible for achieving and maintaining acceptable levels of working capital and all financial hygiene across all Teams.
  • Acting as a role model for the firm's shared values
  • To ensure compliance with the SRA Standards and Regulations

Working Hours
35 hours per week
Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm with 1 unpaid hour for lunch.
Primary location for this role is Liverpool

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Proven track record of working at Deputy Business Unit Director or role with equivalent operational responsibility
  • Proven record of managing High volume capacity fast paced pre litigated teams/units
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience of claims handling
  • Proven ability to explore, challenge and devise optimum team structures to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight schedule
  • Experience of financial management of a cost centre
  • Experience and through understanding of revenue release in a pre-litigated environment
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience of claims handling, including budgeting and forecasting
  • The ability to inspire others to give of their best
  • The ability to analyse complex data and draw conclusions
  • The ability to build strong working relationships within and outside the business
  • Effective complaint handling skills
  • Ability to objectively review performance issues and deal with them effectively
  • Ability to set clear direction for others
