Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced manager to join the Cardiac Sciences Directorate, as Business Manager.

The Cardiac Sciences Directorate at Imperial has an annual income plan of approximately £65m, and employs over 500 people across a range of professional disciplines. The service incorporates Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology, which itself includes community-based services. Hammersmith Hospital is also home to one of London's dedicated Heart Attack Centres, so includes an emergency portal into our services.

Our Directorate provides surgical, medical and diagnostic services as well as a full suite of outpatient activity, delivered virtually as well as in face to face settings. Our specialist services hold close working relationships with Imperial College, and our shared campus offers superb opportunities for joint working across research and academic portfolios.

The role will be based at the Hammersmith site, where the majority of the services are based, although there are elements of the service at both Charing Cross and St Mary's hospitals, as well as a number of community sites across North West London.

We are looking for someone with significant experience of operational management, who can balance the demands of a very busy workload and is dedicated to delivering excellent patient experience. You will need to have good communication skills and be able to demonstrate that you can lead and motivate a team.

Main duties of the job

The Business Manager will report to the General Manager and will provide appropriate support to the General Manager and the Chief of Service in the delivery of all operational functions a discrete section of the directorate.

This will include overseeing the administrative functions within the department, and ensuring all key performance targets are met, and Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to.

The Business Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the appropriate data is available, analysed and presented to support business decision making, forging the gap between financial and business management.

The post holder will provide an increased focus on the delivery of streamlined, efficient services which are managed and benchmarked nationally and internationally. These roles will lead on the project management of the cost reduction programmes and organisational change.

The Business Manager is key to the achievement of KPIs for the service, including the management of 18 week, cancer and diagnostic delivery across the sub-specialties. The post-holder will be responsible for day to day operational management of site specific outpatients and diagnostic scheduling services, including the management of administrative staff.

The post is key to delivery of patient experience through responding to patient queries and complaints in person, via PALS or the complaints team and investigating DATIX incidents.

Person specification

EDUCATION

Essential criteria

  • Relevant first degree
  • Recognised management qualification at postgraduate level and/or experience
  • Completion of project management skills course, e.g. PRINCE2

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

  • Experience of operational and staff management in the NHS
  • Track record of success in delivering change and project management
  • Experience of managing and deciding on complex employment issues including handling grievances and disciplinary issues
  • Experience of writing complex business and project plans with evidence of delivery

SKILLS / ABILITIES

Essential criteria

  • Well developed business planning and marketing skills
  • Ability to analyse and effectively present performance data and identify areas for improvement
  • Ability to co-ordinate and investigate complaints, including experience of dealing with distressed patients / relatives / staff.
  • Excellent organisational skills and time management skills
