Overview

We are seeking a Business Development Manager ("BDM") to lead a number of business and commercial development activities within the newly formed Magnets Business Unit, with a growing Business Development team. This Division has been formed to commercially exploit the global opportunities for our novel HTS magnet technology developed for our fusion programme, both in other fusion applications, and in scientific, medical, industrial, aviation, space, and power generation sectors.

Reporting to the MBU's Business Development Manager, the role will encompass market development, business strategy and planning, together with the structuring and negotiation of new opportunities to develop and deploy our technology, in collaboration with third party partners.

Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split.

Responsibilities

  • Support the MBU Business Development Manager in developing and delivering the overarching business development and commercial strategy.
  • Build long-lasting relationships with our prospective customers, negotiate contracts and agreements (including technical collaborations and partnerships, licenses, technology transfer and other strategic agreements) on behalf of the company.
  • Ownership of customer accounts throughout their lifecycle, working with the delivery team to ensure a high quality of delivery, and providing the voice of the customer.
  • Develop and present high quality business propositions and plans including models of estimated revenues, return on investment, costs, and project long-term earnings.
  • Ensure all internal approvals and supporting papers are prepared which enable progression of prospective and live commercial opportunities.
  • Support the communication and presentation of external opportunities to technical and leadership teams.
  • Work with the team to research and identify new business opportunities for our intellectual property - including new markets, growth areas, trends, customers, partnerships, products, and services - or new ways of reaching existing markets.
  • Identify areas for new technology innovations to realise value from identified new external opportunities.

Requirements

  • Technical and commercial knowledge and experience, to make optimal decisions regarding IP generation, protection, ownership, and associated contractual agreements, and licenses.
  • Highly organised, exhibit an ability to work autonomously with limited supervision and be a strong, pro-active communicator, with the ability to manage and secure the support of multiple internal senior and external stakeholders.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally with a combination experience of Commerce and Engineering or Science.
  • MBA or business qualification would be an advantage.
  • Specialist knowledge in either fusion, physical sciences/ analytical research, space, transportation, motors or generators would be an advantage.
