Contract Type: Fixed term contract / Secondment Opportunity for 8 months

Working Hours: 18.5 hrs per week (term time + 2 weeks)

Worker Type: Hybrid (Dragon Court and Nottingham city Schools in St Anns and Sneinton area of Nottingham)

Salary: Starting Salary is £30,296 (Level one) rising to £33,024 (level four) per annum (pro rata for part-time)

Location: Dragon Court, Woolsthorpe depot, 1 Woolsthorpe Close, NG8 3BP and out in NCC schools

About the Role

This is a new role to be part of an ongoing project funded through the DLUHC Supporting Families team. The purpose of the project is to test methods to better connect the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system of support with the wider Early Help System of support, to ensure families of a child with SEND receive a whole family response to their needs.

The role is to support children and young people with social, emotional and mental health/learning needs within their education setting to maintain placements and secure an effective transition to their secondary phase of education.

The post holder will undertake early help assessments and act as a point of contact for wider family and educational support services.

Each family will have their support needs identified through a whole family assessment and support plan, leading to the creation of a personalised support package.

The Learning Mentor and Family Support role will enable:

  • Development of strong relationships between schools and families
  • Links to professionals already working with families to ensure joined up support
  • Support for young people to develop and retain strong, positive friendship groups
  • Building of family resilience and knowledge of support services
  • Young people to have a key person they can access before during and after transition
  • The family to develop an understanding of secondary education and how to support their child
  • The young person to be confident and ready for their move to secondary education
  • Effective, holistic information sharing through inclusive tools processes
  • Schools to develop understanding of risk factors and how to meet all needs not just learning needs
  • Co-production of a transition information/profile about the young person that can be shared with all schools and families

This is a pilot in partnership with the Wells Academy (as well as feeder Primary schools) that can be rolled out to all schools as a model of good practice at the end of the project. Additionally, parent friendly guidance will be developed to support all parents in the City through the Local Offer.

This role will support the work of the project in the schools to enable the full remit of the project to be delivered.

THE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Experience of working as a teaching assistant, family support worker, youth worker or equivalent
  • Understanding of the principles of inclusive education in relation to children and young people with SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) and learning needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the impact of early childhood experiences upon behaviour and learning in school.
  • The ability to engage constructively with, and relate to, a wide range of children and young people and families with different ethnic and social backgrounds
  • Ability to identify potential barriers to well-being, regulation, learning and engagement and jointly engage in strategies to overcome these barriers.
  • Experience of working in partnership with other agencies that provide universal, targeted and specialist services to address the needs of children, young people and their families

A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.
