Job summary

We are seeking an Optometrist with a special interest in paediatrics. This is a bank post to cover for planned annual leave. Shifts will also be offered to cover sick leave at short notice. The role is to provide optometry services as an autonomous practitioner within Sherwood Forest Hospitals. To assess diagnose and manage the treatment of paediatric patients referred to the Optometry service. This is an exciting opportunity to gain paediatric experience in a hospital setting. Full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside experienced orthoptists responsibility for assessment, diagnosis and management of patients referred to the orthoptic/optometry clinic. Assessing young children, babies and patients with learning and physical disabilities. Working single handedly as sole optometrist.

Job responsibilities

To take sole responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients referred to the Orthoptic/Optometry Clinic from outside agencies, such as G.P.s and school nurses, and also referrals from various departments, including paediatrics, accident and emergency, maxillo-facial and the child assessment centre.

This patient group comprises all cases of ocular motor defects, amblyopia (reduced vision with no pathological cause), complex congenital and acquired defects including neurological abnormalities, genetic disorders and associated ocular abnormalities.

To formulate individualised management and treatment programmes using clinical reasoning, evidence based practise and a wide range of treatment skills.

Communicating effectively with patients and parents and carers those plans and to gain informed consent to those treatment plans.

To assess young children, babies, patients with learning difficulties and physical disabilities requiring considerable skill, experience and patience.

Skills of persuasion and motivation are essential to ensure assessment and treatment is carried out. Speed, accuracy and manual dexterity are essential.
