Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be responsible for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the planned care, by daily reviewing the care being given, from reports from other nursing staff, direct observation for the patient and ensuring that accurate nursing records are maintained, through monitoring and auditing.

To participate in non-clinical management processes i.e. Performance Review, sickness management, recruitment and selection and ensuring annual appraisals are undertaken.

Be available to take responsibility for the co-ordination of 24-hour nursing care of each patient in the department.

To maintain up to date knowledge of and adhere to the NMC / HCPC Code of Conduct and other regulations, and Trust policies and protocols for example the storage and administration of drugs.

Use good communication skills to disseminate information and promote and maintain good working relationships within the department and Trust wide.

Promote the use of communications skills to overcome language and understanding difficulties when discussing complex or sensitive issues relating to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment with patients and their relatives.

Be able to show empathy and compassion when caring for people who are experiencing bereavement or have a relative who is critically ill.

Be able to use communication skills when taking telephone queries about medical conditions or injuries, the condition of patients or from patients or their relatives who have a complaint.

To assist in establishing the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.

Be responsible for the assessment of nursing needs and plan and implement care required by patients, in conjunction with nursing observations, medical requirement and with the co-operation and partnership of the patient and their relatives.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Current NMC registration as a nurse or current HCPC registration in an appropriate field (ODP / Paramedic etc.)
  • Mentorship course or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • ATLS / EPALS / HMIMMS
  • Leadership qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Recent relevant experience as band 6 or 7 in hospital based emergency care
  • Experience at managing a team
  • Experience of professional development
  • Experience of health roster and managing sickness
  • Experience of clinical governance
  • Evidence of Post Graduate degree level emergency nursing / relevant experience

Desirable criteria

  • ATNC

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

  • Venepuncture/cannulation
  • Plastering/Splints/Slings
  • Wound care and management of burns
  • Triage
  • Drug administration including IV

Desirable criteria

  • Understanding of government targets
