Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional individual to be appointed as a B6 Deputy Portfolio Manager within the growing R&D Office at the Royal Free Hospital.

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, be practical, methodical and organised.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the overall set-up management of all research that falls with assigned areas. The post holder will cost studies that are presented to feasibility committees for review and will identify gaps in the budget, the need for agreements and any governance issues related to setting up the study at RFL. Once the studies are open, the post-holder will provide ongoing performance management to ensure that studies meet key performance indicators whilst being compliant with UK research regulations.

The Deputy Research Portfolio Manager will provide clinical research regulatory advice and guidance to researchers and their teams, R&D staff and sponsors. This will include facilitating researchers questions, Trials Feasibility Committee (TFC) chairs and sponsors to set-up new studies. The post-holder will ensure that the R&D Office collates all necessary documentation for Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust to confirm capacity to open the study. They will also play a key role in partnership with their research theme clinical directors and research theme lead nurses in meeting the strategic objectives of their respective research theme and thereby contributing to the achievement of the overall clinical research and development objectives of the trust.

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, be practical, methodical and organised. A high level of attention to detail will be a must in this role.

  • Knowledge of research regulatory issues governing the conduct of clinical research (UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations including all amendments, Mental Capacity Act, Adults with Incapacity Act Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP), HRA approval process, gained through experience/ training
  • Experience of working on or setting up clinical trials/ research
  • Able to demonstrate the importance of confidentiality
  • Understand the importance and role audits
  • Ability to work with diverse professional groups
  • Influencing and negotiating skills
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of research feasibility and sponsorship processes of clinical research
  • Experience in costing commercial clinical research and/or knowledge of the Department of Health's 'Attributing the costs of health & social care Research & Development' (AcoRD)
  • Demonstrable project management experience

Education & professional Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Project Management Qualification or equivalent relevant experience
