JOB TITLE

Associate or Senior Associate (4+ PQE) - Real Estate I Commercial Property

Based in Edinburgh or Glasgow

JOB PURPOSE

We have an opportunity for an Associate or Senior Associate to join the Real Estate practice, working on market leading Scots law investment, financing and development transactions in sectors including retail, leisure, offices, life sciences and universities and asset management work within those sectors for both landlord and tenant/occupier.
The role will ideally be based in Edinburgh however Glasgow would be considered, as you will be working across teams based in both locations. You will play a vital role in major projects and high value cross border deals and running your own independent transactions for Scottish and London based clients active in Scotland. Some of the work you will be involved in includes:

  • Acting for private equity, High Net Worth Individuals, international retailers and overseas investors in the sale and acquisition of investment properties in Scotland
  • Acting in the acquisition and sale of shopping centres, retail parks and high value High St retail
  • Asset management work on high profile properties (including well known shopping centres and retail parks), to include lettings and advising on lease re-gears and variations, and ancillary documentation
  • Acting on the Scottish real estate elements of corporate acquisitions, including inputting into Share Purchase Agreements for UK and international clients
  • Acting for traditional and new lenders in high value financings across various real estate sectors
  • Working alongside City and US law firms on the Scottish end of UK wide or pan-European property portfolio acquisitions and disposals.

CORE TASKS

  • Working with, and supported by, other Senior Associates, Associates and Solicitors as part of the 'team' and working closely with our banking, corporate, planning and construction teams
  • Shaping commercial solutions to problems and helping deliver transactions on time
  • Title examination, lease reporting and negotiation of sale and purchase contracts
  • Drafting and negotiating leases of prime office, retail and life sciences properties, acting primarily for both landlords/investors and tenants/occupiers
  • Asset management including dealing with letting documentation and re-gears, in respect of retail and office properties
  • Working with English and US law firms in cross border deals, reporting to them or directly to their clients
  • Working alongside and helping lead junior lawyers
  • Harnessing IT to deliver work as efficiently as possible
  • Be aware of Brodies' information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.

PERSON SPECIFICATION & SKILLS

  • Experienced in Scottish real estate transactions and sound understanding of Scots real estate law
  • Takes a pragmatic and commercial approach to transactions
  • Strong focus on client service and delivery
  • Interest and enthusiasm for the property industry
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for direct client contact and working with colleagues in other disciplines across the firm
  • Keen to spot opportunities to develop business
  • Communicates in a confident, clear and relaxed way and able to participate in business development objectives with clients and potential referrers
  • Where appropriate takes responsibility for their own transactions and advice, subject to supervision
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Shows understanding of clients' needs, and tailors advice appropriately
  • Works to understand the team's key clients, the industry they operate in and the challenges they face
