Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As one of the largest specialist mental health providers in the country providing inpatient and community-based mental health care for people living in Bolton, the city of Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Wigan, and a wide range of specialist mental health and addiction services across Greater Manchester, the North West of England and beyond, GMMH aims to be at the forefront of mental health research and innovation. Not only is this key to improving outcomes for service users and improving and developing services, but also plays an important role in the recruitment and retention of staff across the Trust.

The post holder will one of a team of Associate Directors of R&I, with shared responsibility for the strategic development, management and coordination of the research and innovation activity of the Trust, in the context of national policy initiatives and developments.

The Associate Director of Research & Innovation will work as part of senior leadership team in Research & Innovation to deliver local and national excellence in mental health research. The post holder will oversee all aspects of research and innovation within the Trust. They will provide strategic clinical and academic leadership in further developing the Trust's investment in research and innovation. They will ensure increasing involvement in high quality multi-disciplinary research relevant to the improvement of mental health services and ensuring that research is appropriately integrated into the Trust's service development programmes and governance arrangements. They will lead on the development of collaborations and partnerships with other organisations across Greater Manchester, including NIHR infrastructure, NHS Trusts and HEIs.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Qualified healthcare professional (non-medical)
  • PhD or equivalent
  • Evidence of satisfactory personal development

Desirable criteria

  • Recognised management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience at a senior level in Research and Innovation, including experience of developing strategies
  • Experience of multi-professional collaboration
  • Experience of working with R&I organisations
  • Commitment to service user and carer involvement and engagement in all stages of the research process.
  • Knowledge of research processes, including regulatory requirements, funding structures and research infrastructure.
  • Experience of providing academic leadership.
  • Experience of Research Ethics Committees.
