Payroll Operate (delivery) is a growth area for Deloitte and our Payroll & Workforce Management specialist team are at the heart of it. Sat within the Global Employer Services group, Payroll & Workforce Management (PWFM) is made up two key pillars: Payroll Operate and Payroll Advisory.
Our Payroll Operate team is a group of experts who specialise in providing a comprehensive range of payroll compliance and related advisory services.
Our team is dedicated to delivering fully managed payroll outsourced services to clients across all industries and business sectors. Our Payroll Operate services include UK domestic, UK expatriate and global (multi-territory) payroll.
We understand that our clients rely on us to be a reliable and trustworthy partner in delivering payroll to their employees and our payroll services are often delivered alongside broader Deloitte services such as business tax or global mobility.

Associate Directors take the lead on supporting and delivering key parts of our client services. The role is critical to the successful delivery of our Payroll Operate business.
As an Associate Director you will use your commercial awareness and professional expertise to deliver the best possible experience and outcomes for our clients.
You will have an opportunity to work with Partners and Directors in the business and support various teams across the firm and will be expected to proactively identify innovative solutions for your clients and pursue new business development opportunities by utilising your networks and market knowledge.
You will be either a people manager or act as a coach or team player and enjoy sharing your knowledge and expertise with others, as well as continuing to build your own technical expertise or specialism.
Responsibilities include:
- Ownership, management and leadership of client payroll portfolio to include client relationship, risk management, financials (client billing and cash collection), oversight of work delivery including appropriate sign-off.
- Payroll Operate team leadership role, collaborating closely with other Associate Directors, Directors and Partners.
- Developing new client relationships, expanding existing client relationships and leading market and bid activity for Payroll Operate opportunities, including selling the breadth of PWFM services.
- Ensuring that all Deloitte and regulatory standards and processes are adhered to for all deliverables.
- Plays an active role in the Payroll Operate business, inputting into the design of the future strategy and its execution.
- Opportunity to support the Payroll Advisory team with payroll consulting projects utilising pre-existing skillsets and experience.
- Playing an active role at client seminars and with the production of marketing materials.
- Training, development and mentoring of team members, including new intake of Analysts (Graduates and Brightstarts) and Consultants.
Connect to your skills and professional experience
- CIPP or similar qualified or equivalent experience.
- Excellent UK domestic technical knowledge with good level of Expatriate experience.
- Experience of being part of or managing a payroll work stream within Professional Services company, or a large Bureau (client-facing or internal).
- Understanding of operational payroll within a large organisation or payroll vendor.
- Experience of the full annual payroll cycle.
- Experience of being part of a team to successfully deliver payroll compliance, payroll projects and deliverables, including scoping, planning, reviewing and achieving sign-off.
- Strong technical drafting skills and verbal communication skills.
- Effective prioritisation management and organisational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong team-player.
- Knowledge and understanding of payroll business processes.
- Working with 3rd parties, including payroll vendors.
- Analytical skills used to derive insight from complex and varied information sources and the ability to input into the creation of sound recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentations, meeting minutes, workshop participation, business and report writing - capable of playing an active role in pre-sales and bid development.
