National Highways have an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to join our team in the East Region. Within this role you will be supporting the delivery of a portfolio of concrete roads maintenance and improvement projects; although, you may be required to support on a large variety of roads and structures throughout the region.

The Assistant Project Manager will support on stakeholder and customer engagement, and planning and delivery of allocated highway construction projects. Monitoring the performance of project teams, multiple external contractors and consultants. Ensuring adherence to effective governance, quality assurance, health and safety, technical and specialist standards across the supply chain and National Highways ensuring successful delivery of agreed project outcomes and acting in line with mandatory and delegated responsibilities. This role plays a pivotal part in supporting the local economy making sure transport links run safely and smoothly.

The role will involve occasional travel to sites across the East region.

What you'll be leading on

  • A key aspect of this role will be assisting, managing and delivering high quality customer engagement/communication throughout the delivery of projects. The schemes we deliver are often long duration and have complex traffic management, which will require excellent communication to the travelling public, adjoining communities and key stakeholders.
  • Support the delivery of complex highway construction projects whilst managing standard allocated projects within the Region's rolling 5 year capital programme, across all stages of the project lifecycle, from design to handback into maintenance.
  • Develop, support and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the Project Managers, key stakeholders, suppliers, contractors and across National Highways teams, to ensure full mutual understanding for the allocated projects. Report on and review delivery performance, to develop solutions that resolve issues and to prepare project business cases.
  • Assist Project Managers to manage and motivate multiple supply chain partners and contractors to deliver allocated projects to programme, cost and quality, whilst driving efficiencies.
  • Comply with National Highways Operations Quality Management System (QMS) on all projects in scope to enable delivery within agreed parameters for quality, cost and time ensuring they meet intended outcomes, customer service levels, corporate technical, specialist health and safety.
  • Assist in programme management, reporting and risk management against the capital expenditure budgets for all projects in scope, ensuring effective financial and contractual practices are in place and adhered to by all project resources.

To be Successful

  • Excellent stakeholder management and communications skills
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, practices and policies for health, safety, environment and wellbeing in construction, including CDM Regs 2015.
  • Awareness of contract management under the NEC3 or NEC4 forms of contract
  • Ability to execute tasks independently, yet work collaboratively within a team
  • Recognised qualification in engineering and/or project or programme management or equivalent vocational experience
