NT Food and Drink enhances the experience of visitors to the NT through delivery of hospitality across the building. The Understudy sits in a prime location on the north-east corner of the National Theatre, overlooking the Thames, and boasting an afternoon sun-soaked terrace to boot. This relatively young member of the NT's food and drink offering provides local craft beer & spirits, cocktails and street food seven days a week, with welcoming personality to boot. Its generous outdoor space allows it to be operational both inside and out, with events running throughout the year. 2023's Summer Activation promises to be one long party, that everyone will want a ticket to.

You might still have learning to do yourself, but you're ready to impart your knowledge and learn on the job. You know your way around a pub - we're not just talking the bar, but backstage too - the cellar, the kitchen and everything else in between.

THE ROLE
The Assistant Manager is responsible for running The Understudy and its associated areas for the duration of a shift; whilst you might have the support of an Assistant General Manager or more senior role working with you, you'll be responsible for overseeing operations, and the first point of contact for Team Leaders if they need assistance, as well as the wider building operations setup, so you'll need to be
on top of operations of both customer facing sales, and the trader's kitchen, which provides The Understudy's food offering. You will manage and support Team Leaders and Customer Service Advisors to provide highly visible leadership Front of House, greeting and engaging with customers when required. You will lead, supervise, motivate and support to coordinate team members, ensuring delivery of a world class customer service experience to all patrons of The Understudy and the NT. You will be meticulous in setup of the venue, having adequate stock for service, knowing which members of the you're working with and ensuring workspaces are kept clean and presentable. You will take an active role in the induction, training, and development of staff.
You are a member of the management team, so back of house, you work with the AGM & GM to ensure standards are in place in terms of people training and development, stock control and management, and that deep cleaning occurs in line with schedules, including cleaning of lines, storage facilities and the cellar.
You will attend management meetings as required and play an active role in the development of The Understudy, through product suggestion and ideas for events to drive sales.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leadership of a large team; supporting Team Leaders with responsibility for staff and customers.
- Taking a warm, approachable and professional pride in how you are presented, as well as the first impression your workspace gives every visitor.
- Acting as an example for other team members by demonstrating consistently high standards of service.
- Helping visitors and audiences find their way around The Understudy and wider NT, ensuring they get the most out of their visit.
- Pre-empting customer needs to provide an informed and tailored level of information and support, always looking to go above and beyond.
- Being solution focussed and working to find the best outcome for the customer.
- Always looking for ways to improve and actively feedback constructive ideas.
- Managing stock; taking in deliveries, rotating effectively as required, ensuring inter-departmental transfers are accounted for.
- Undertaking training and development in line with company expectation and speaking to your managers to arrange additional training as required.
- Understanding basic employment policies, Licensing Laws, Health and Safety etc.
- Supporting the whole team to ensure we meet all legal and company requirements for fire, food safety, health, safety and hygiene.
- Taking a lead on staff training and development; assisting senior management in preparation of training programmes for the team, and delivering in-house training as required.
- Performing logistical and administrative duties when required to aid commercial operations.
- Creating, delivering and upholding a positive, open and inclusive workplace.
- Meeting and driving sales and profitability targets
- Ensuring consistent, high-quality food and beverages are served to customers.
- Undertaking any other duties as may be reasonably required.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Available to work a flexible shift pattern, which will include regular weekend shifts.
- Experience of leading a team or demonstrable understanding of what staff supervision is, and the kind of leader you will be.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Providing efficient and effective service, whilst maintaining a professional demeanour even under stress.
- An enthusiastic and motivated team player, demonstrating a genuine passion for providing first class customer service.
- Knowledge of the craft industry (beer, spirits & soft drinks) both within London and further afield is essential.
- A love of food and cuisine and being confident to try and share new experiences.
- The ability to inspire others and motivate the team to achieve sales targets.
- Adhering to all Health and Safety, Statutory and Company Policies.
- Ability to keep up in a fast-paced environment and to think on your feet.
- You treat everyone the same - whatever your position and responsibilities, you understand that we're all a KP, cleaner or bar back when the business needs us to be.
- A Personal Licence is desirable, but not essential.
