The Role

The Gateley Group provide expert witness services to the Built Environment. This is provided as both written and oral evidence in pre-action advice in an effort to avoid formal proceedings, and within all forms of dispute proceedings including adjudication, arbitration, mediation and litigation.

Across the Group, Gateley offer expert witness services across a wide range of disciplines including;
• Building Surveying
• Quantity Surveying
• Architectural
• Quantum
• Delay
• Construction Defects
• Structural Engineering

Employed by Gateley Vinden, the Head of Expert Witness Services is expected to lead the service offering as an individual fee earner and support other experienced and developing experts throughout the Group. They are to lead training and guidance for team members and to work with all service lines to ensure common and appropriate standards are followed.

An important part of the role shall be the ability to develop the current expert witness offering and grow both the existing client base and the expert pool across the Group. The Head of Expert Witness Services shall be responsible for setting and delivering a focused marketing strategy, including identifying new markets, new partnerships, new ways to reach existing markets, and/or enhancing service offerings to better meet the needs of existing clients.

You will be responsible for the following:
• Senior management role reporting directly to the Board.
• Provide expert witness services in connection with the candidate's specialist field.
• Managing assignments as the lead testifying expert.
• Testifying and being cross-examined based on your evidence in formal dispute proceedings.
• Lead the company's expert witness marketing objectives, targets and initiatives.
• Lead company-wide training and development of expert witness services.
• Manage the expert witness team and showcase the team's skills and attract expert instructions.
• Keep abreast and train team members of latest case law and protocols.
• Provide proposals to clients and allocate commissions/leads to colleagues and brief accordingly.
• Develop the next generation of expert witness engineers, surveyors and architects throughout the Group.

The Person

Experience working for a leading construction/property consultancy (preferably in a leadership position)
• Have experience of acting as an appointed expert within adjudication, arbitration and litigation.
• Ideally, you will have been cross-examined and participated in hot tubbing sessions.
• Have demonstrable experience of writing expert reports for disputes.
• The ability to manage teams of internal and external staff effectively.
• Proven track record in business development
• Passionate about the industry and want to give something back.
• Confident public speaker that can present within seminars and deliver proposals.
• Happy to work throughout the UK, with occasional international travel.
• Passionate and enthusiastic personality, that can buy into the businesses plans and bring in new work.
• Must be full member of a relevant and highly respected professional body relevant to their discipline. i.e. RICS, MCIOB etc.
• Must have a degree within the respective discipline.
• Ideally have studied further education such as an LLB, LLM or MSc in Construction Law
• Ideally have a recognised and accredited Expert Witness qualification.
• Ideally be a registered Expert Witness within relevant professional bodies.
