Solent Youth Action is a youth provision charity based in Eastleigh, supporting vulnerable young people aged 10- 25 to engage in positive activities to improve their emotional well-being, independence and self esteem.

  • We target young people who are Neurodiverse, those with physical and learning disabilities, those with mental health issues, young carers with challenging behaviours, those with a history or who are at risk of offending and those who display violence at home.
  • We do this by running supported youth clubs, holiday schemes, volunteer projects, one to one mentoring activities and delivering informative workshops on youth trending issues.
  • We ensure our staff and volunteers are suitably trained and supported.
  • We are a youth focussed team, who enjoy seeing young people develop and grow despite their personal challenges. We also like cake.

Job Description

PURPOSE OF POST

  • To improve the emotional, social & economic outcomes of vulnerable young people aged 10-25 in Hampshire.
  • Work as part of the youth work team to facilitate all youth club & Holiday scheme provision, including development, resourcing materials, promotion & direct delivery.
  • Develop & deliver the Supported Volunteer Scheme on a weekly basis including promoting, recruiting young people to the project, directly supporting those already engaged, as well as developing the service to support the changing needs of the young people involved.
  • Deliver workshops to young people within secondary school settings on youth trending issues.
  • Provide regular one to one mentoring support to young people through social activities.
  • Develop & deliver new projects & initiatives to vulnerable young people in response to emerging trends.
  • Identify young people who are underrepresented & develop projects to inspire & reduce isolation.
  • Provide regular reports & output data, including collecting photographic evidence & regular user-led evaluations of all service delivery.
  • Actively promote SYA services.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • To ensure the 'voice' of vulnerable & diverse young people are included within the development of SYA services.
  • To undertake a minimum of 65% face to face work with young people in a variety of settings, e.g. home visits, schools, youth clubs, holiday schemes, volunteering projects, residential experiences etc. This will include working evenings and potentially (though rarely) weekends.
  • To co-ordinate, develop, & support services within SYA.
  • To network with agencies & partnerships to further the objectives of this post and project, including attending lead networking meetings and promotional events.
  • To assist with the design, production &/or commissioning of publicity materials which promote &/or record the work of SYA.
  • To be mobile within the Hampshire area & be willing to work with some flexibility to most appropriately meet identified needs.
  • To undergo MIDAS minibus driving training.

Youth Work Provision

Youth clubs run Weekly in term time: Tuesdays & Wednesday 6-9pm

Holiday schemes run 3 days per week throughout all school holidays 9am- 5pm

  • Work as part of youth work team to support & guide our provision, including directly delivering regular youth club sessions.
  • Develop & facilitate variety of creative activities for young people aged 10-25, incorporating their interests & youth topics ensuring that are age/need appropriate & young person centred.
  • Take the lead in planning sessions, complete paperwork & evaluate sessions. Oversee all groups.
  • To create a warm, safe, welcoming environment for young people engaging, supporting & empowering them to get involved.

Supported Volunteering Provision

Based at the Routes Skills Centre & SYA Allotment (both outdoor, conservation sites)

  • Support & run the weekly Supported Volunteer scheme, providing transport for those where required.
  • Plan, design & deliver weekly tasks with volunteers, managing behavioural issues & supporting progression.
  • Recruit new young people onto the projects.
  • Delivering all additional supported volunteer scheme taster days as & when directed to by the Chief Executive Officer.

Intervention workshops & mentoring

Within schools & community settings

  • Develop & deliver workshops to young people on subjects of interest & importance to them to enable them to make informed decisions.
  • Provide one to one support to our most vulnerable young people, supporting them to engage in social activities of their choosing within the community (such as cinema, bowling, sports activities).

All Provision

  • To regularly consult young people with all our services & develop activities around their feedback
  • To comply with all SYA policies & conditions of service.
  • To ensure a positive working environment & to assist in the general running of the organisation.
  • To work as a team by actively sharing & exchanging information across the organisation, attending staff meetings & working together with other staff members when roles & interests overlap.
  • To undertake training as required & agreed through supervision, to build up specialist knowledge & experience in meeting the needs of the young people SYA serves.
  • To be aware of the Health & Safety at Work Act and other legislation as appropriate, with particular reference to equal opportunities legislation, sex & race equality.
  • Any other duties falling within the scope of the post, as requested by management.

Qualifications

Qualifications are not so essential (though very welcome), but we are looking for the following as essentials for the role:

  • Driving licence & regular access to a car.
  • Experience of working in the field of youth work or education.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Creativity & adaptability.
  • Ability to effectively work within a team as well as alone and on own initiative.
  • To be able to work in varying environments, including outside at an allotment, within an office, at a school and within the community.
  • Ability to complete administrative tasks, including full knowledge of Microsoft office package.
  • Commitment to personal development within the organisation.
  • Ability to work evenings in term times & during the day throughout school holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people & their parents, including those who are neurodiverse.

Additional Information

  • The delivery of services is in Eastleigh and Southampton, with holiday scheme sessions including a further geographical area.
  • Ethical pension scheme.
  • Tailored training to suit the needs of the individual to enable them to carry out role effectively.
  • Role is subject to an enhanced DBS check as well as 2 returned & satisfactory references.
  • Salary will be paid monthly, on the 25th of each month in arrears.
  • The post is Full Time (37 hours) but flexibility will be needed to meet the needs of the project, including regular evening and occasional weekend hours. Time off in lieu will be available where appropriate.
  • The project covers the South of Hampshire and requires the role to transport young people when necessary, so it is essential that the successful candidate can access own transport. Travel allowance at Inland Revenue rates will be payable.
  • Annual leave will be 25 days.
