The Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (FoLSM) is hiring a Senior Technician to support practical education delivery in the Centre for Education. The post holder will have a great opportunity to be part of a team helping to deliver world class practical education and enhancing the student experience. About the role
The role involves working with a multi-disciplinary team across different departments, preparing labs for large scale practical teaching. The role will have a focus on health & safety and the environmental sustainability of lab practices. The post holder will be based on Waterloo campus looking after 3 teaching labs and a team of 2/3 technicians. The position offers a chance to contribute to innovation in teaching and enhance the student experience.
The role requires applying in-depth technical or scientific knowledge to manage a range of technical services efficiently while overseeing equipment, systems, and supply security, alongside supervising a small team. The post holder will engage in continuing professional development aligned with the Technician Commitment, ensuring ongoing growth and skill enhancement. Key duties include managing workloads based on set plans, adapting to shifting priorities, and using analytical skills to solve service-impacting problems and support decision-making. Collaboration with university networks, including the King's Technical Network and Centre for Education, is vital for enhancing service delivery and practical education. The role emphasizes clear communication, adaptable procedures, and building internal and external relationships to coordinate and deliver services effectively. A commitment to sustainable practices is essential, including leadership in sustainability audits, fostering environmentally responsible practices, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Finally, the role promotes an inclusive culture, working with diverse academic, research, and professional staff, and participating in cross-university projects as needed. Additional responsibilities may arise within the role's scope, and employees are expected to follow established duties and standards consistently.
This is a full time (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Minimum level 4 qualification, e.g., higher apprenticeship, HNC or other Level 4 award, plus work experience in relevant technical/scientific posts OR Considerable knowledge and skills gained through work experience in relevant technical or scientific posts.
- Evidence of an active commitment to career development including professional registration, such as RSci, or working towards CSci and clear progression in increasingly demanding jobs.
- Extensive technical experience and knowledge of a range of scientific procedures and the underpinning scientific theory applicable to the work area and their environmental impact.
- Clear spoken and written communication skills, with proficient computer use and strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills. Proactive and responsive to contacts in the immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g., suppliers) to build relationships and networks.
- Solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent planning and analytical skills, able to manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision.
- Good working knowledge of regulations and best practice governing area of work, including Health & Safety and environmental sustainability
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds, with a deep appreciation for the value of diverse perspectives.
- Knowledge of environmental impacts of laboratory work and an interest in reducing their negative impacts.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of giving technical support in the delivery of large-scale practical classes in the health sciences or similar disciplines.
- Experience working in roles covering health and safety
- Experience in supervising/advising less experienced colleagues, monitoring, and providing feedback on performance.
