Detailed job description and main responsibilities
MANAGEMENT
1. To be directly responsible for and manage the Physiotherapy service for CAR-T and Haematology with support from senior Occupational Therapy and senior Physiotherapy staff.
2. To conduct personal development review / appraisal on a regular basis in line with Trust policy.
CLINICAL
1. To co-ordinate and ensure effective delivery of highly specialised physiotherapy treatment to CAR-T in- and outpatients within the Trust using advanced clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide specialist individualised programmes of care before, during and after CAR-T therapy.
2. As a CAR-T and Haematology oncology specialist to be clinically responsible for a highly complex area of work and independently plan, organise and prioritise patient related and professional demands.
3. To act as a resource providing specialist and expert advice, teaching and training within and external to the organisation regarding physiotherapy management of CAR-T and haematology patients.
4. To represent AHPs in appropriate multidisciplinary meetings to provide expert advice to clinicians regarding specialist physiotherapy management for CAR-T and haematology patients based on clinical evidence.
5. To convey complex specialised physiotherapy advice and lifestyle changes to patients and carers using advanced counselling and communication skills.
6. To advise, teach and instruct patients, carers and other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy in relation to the management of CAR-T and haematology a specialist area of oncology physiotherapy.
7. To refer patients to primary, secondary or alternative tertiary care for monitoring and therapeutic support following transfer or discharge.
8. To initiate and implement changes to working practice and policies where this will result in improved performance / patient care across the organisation.
9. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date documentation on individual patients in line with local and national standards and be responsible for the appropriate storage of physiotherapy records in line with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Trust policies on confidentiality and GDPR
10. To provide timely and informative reports and discharge summaries for other agencies, e.g. Consultants, Specialist Nurses, Social Services, Primary Care colleagues to ensure effective and seamless pathways of care.
11. To train and supervise student physiotherapists, junior staff and assistants.
12. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment and ensure that junior staff, assistants, physiotherapy students, carers and other health care professionals attain competency prior to use.
13. To assist the physiotherapy provision and management in other areas of the hospital during periods of staff absence.
14. To develop competencies to enable appropriate cross working between the Senior Physiotherapist, Senior Occupational therapist, and Senior Dietitian in CAR-T/ haematology to ensure effective and seamless working
15. To be an active member of the weekend and on-call service.
PROFESSIONAL
1. To be fully aware of and comply with the rules of professional conduct set out by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
2. To be professional, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of patients in your care.
3. To ensure a high standard of patient care is provided by developing, implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work area.
4. To be responsible for own clinical professional development (CPD) to maintain competency and ensure best practice.
5. To work within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
6. To be an active member of the in-service training programme.
7. To disseminate expert knowledge of physiotherapy in supportive and palliative care through the organisation of and presentation at courses, study days and conferences locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
8. To continually evaluate the effectiveness of the CAR-T physiotherapy service through the use of evidence-based practice projects and audits, and to initiate and implement changes to working practice and policies where this will result in improved performance/patient care across the organisation.
9. To undertake audit and research into specific areas of clinical practice.
10. To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
11. To provide expert physiotherapy contribution into multidisciplinary service delivery and policy projects within the trust, throughout the cancer network and nationally (e.g. implementation of NICE guidance documents)
12. To raise awareness of the role of the physiotherapist in oncology and palliative care, specifically within CAR-T and Haematology.
ORGANISATIONAL
1. To be responsible for a designated area of work as agreed with the physiotherapy manager.
2. To prioritise workload, balancing patient related and professional demands and ensure that these remain in accordance with the department as a whole.
3. To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties.
4. To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in reviewing and updating these as appropriate.
5. To participate in the Trust's essential training programme.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Physiotherapy Degree or equivalent
- HCPC registration
- Additional training in clinical and medical oncology physiotherapy including haematology
Desirable criteria
- Recognised Postgraduate qualification in Oncology and/or Palliative care
- Counselling qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in research methodology
- ECDL or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 4 years post registration experience, including significant experience in the physiotherapy management of oncology patients including haematology at a senior level.
- Previous involvement in clinical effectiveness and audit projects Experience of service development
Desirable criteria
- Experience in the treatment of patients who have MSCC
- Experience of recent involvement in emergency on-call rota
- Experience in managing patients within an acute setting
- In-depth experience in the physiotherapy management of patients with multiple and complex oncology presentation, including MSCC, haematology, transplant and respiratory problems
Skills

- Knowledge and understanding of the physiotherapy management of a wide range of problems
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of local community teams, referral patterns etc.
- Knowledge of government policy re cancer services e.g. 'Long Term Plan', NICE guidance, Peer Review, etc. and how these impact on services
Other
Essential criteria
- Membership of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
- Able to participate in seven day and out of hours working as part of the on call respiratory rota
- Ability to motivate others

- Excellent inter-personal skills - flexible, empathetic, reliable and having the ability to problem solve
