Senior Laboratory Technician

Are you a dedicated and experienced laboratory technician with a strong background in health and safety? Do you thrive in a dynamic research and teaching environment? We are looking for a proactive and highly organised Senior Laboratory Technician to join our team to oversee two Assistant Laboratory Technicians (Autoclaves), manage biological waste autoclaves, and play a key role in maintaining safe and compliant facilities.

About the Role
As a Senior Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for ensuring the operations of decontamination and processing of Laboratory waste materials as well as assisting with ensuring compliance with health& safety regulations. You will work closely with academics, researchers, and students to promote best practices in laboratory safety, oversee risk assessments, and contribute to the development of a robust health and safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and support Assistant Laboratory Technicians (Autoclaves).
  • Oversee operational function of autoclaves, glass washers, and laundry equipment.
  • Ensure lab safety, waste disposal, and equipment maintenance.
  • Liaise with Estates, Facilities, and service providers for repairs and validations.
  • Conduct health and safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
  • Provide guidance on health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in investigations on accidents and incidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Oversee the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances.

About You
We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual with:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Proven experience working in a laboratory setting, with a strong understanding of health and safety regulations.
  • A good working knowledge of COSHH, risk assessments, and laboratory best practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to train and guide others.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, solutions focused output
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
