About King's Centre for International Education and Languages

King's Centre for International Education and Languages is a new, cross-cutting Centre designed to widen the educational reach of King's. It brings together three existing areas: King's Foundations, Summer Programmes, and King's Language Centre. This brings together international pathway provision, pre sessional programmes, pre-university summer courses, UG summer modules, UG language modules, bespoke language programmes for the community and our partners, and academic skills provision for all King's students. Each of these areas are well established, respected and recognised within and beyond the King's community. The Centre is focused on enabling collaboration between the three departments to further advance our work in promoting educational excellence and supporting and enhancing the student experience. The Centre has significant expertise in International Education and makes a significant contribution to the rich and diverse make-up of the King's student body.

About the role

Purpose of the Role

To manage the wellbeing and pastoral care of 16 and 17-years old Pre-University Summer School residential students appropriate to their age and background, to ensure their wellbeing whilst attending King's Summer Programmes. To effectively manage the social activity programme ensuring that it is inclusive, safe, and suitable for all students, promoting it effectively to encourage high participation rates. Leading a team of residential assistants, this role provides both - proactive care and support to all students during their stay as well as support to students in crisis. The postholder will be required to live in the designated student residence (Stamford Street Apartments) between 5 July and 1 August 2026 and must hold a valid enhanced DBS certificate. The accommodation provision in SSA is free of charge and includes 2 meals per day (breakfast and dinner) served in the onsite restaurant. The postholder will work closely with the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager, Student Experience and Academic Programme managers to ensure the smooth day to day running of the summer school.

Responsibilities

Student Pastoral Care and Safeguarding

• Ensure the safety and security of the students in accommodation, alongside King's Security and Residences Reception teams

• Ensure attendance is taken and accurately maintained, and absences are investigated as a priority

• Ensure that Safeguarding policies and procedures are understood and followed by all Residential Assistants

• Deputise for the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager in the capacity of a Designated Safeguarding Officer in their absence

• Triage queries and concerns of all students, liaising with the appropriate staff to ensure resolution

• Carry out regular accommodation checks to ensure that Residential Assistants monitor noise levels, litter, general tidiness, and damage, and follow all necessary residential systems and procedures. Work with the extended Summer team to ensure the highest possible student satisfaction levels are achieved by reviewing students' questionnaire results on a weekly basis and creating, logging, and implementing a weekly action plan to address feedback and suggestions

• Manage any emergency incidents arising during the night that may compromise the security and/or safety of the students and staff, following King's Summer Programmes escalation and incident policies

• Complete incident reports and preliminary investigations, escalating findings to the Senior PreUniversity Summer School Manager as appropriate

• Provide a confidential space for students to speak about issues related to their wellbeing

• Offer support to residential assistants when incidents relating to students occur, including disruptive behaviour and those related to alcohol or substance misuse

• Raise any health and safety issues regarding student welfare and the breaching of any welfare policies to the specified member of College staff

Staff Leadership and Management

• Support the wider Summer Programmes team and the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager with the recruitment, induction and onboarding of the Summer School Assistants team providing support, guidance, and additional training where necessary

• Support the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager in the production and management of the rota for the Residential Assistants team ensuring adequate ratios of staff based on the number of students and the types of planned activities

. • Support the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager in the management of the Residential Assistants team

• Deputise for the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager in their absence

• Develop and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with the Residential Assistants to ensure good teamwork and a strong, supported work culture

Social Programme

• Responsible for organising and execution of the extracurricular activities programme, ensuring the programme is inclusive, safe, and suitable for all students

• Promoting the Activity Programme effectively to the student body, maintaining high levels of participation

• Ensuring a sufficient stock/equipment is available for delivery of the social activities and monitoring all out-going expenditure (if necessary) in-line with approved budgets

• Diligently updating facilities sheets, keeping a clear line of communication with venue staff throughout

• Keep a detailed record of purchase invoices, bookings and registers

• Maintaining a great presence throughout, ensuring you are visible to students and easily contactable by members of the Summer Programmes team Residential Assistants and parents/carers.

• Working with the Senior Pre-University Summer School Manager to conduct risk assessments for onsite activities, sharing these with key stakeholders.

Other

• Ensure Health & Safety policies, and procedures along with applicable risk assessments are being adhered to, for students and staff to be always safe

• Review leaflets, posters, contact information and ensure they are kept up to date

• Attend ad-hoc meetings to discuss current welfare and discipline cases

Hours:

January -March: Mon-Fri, flexible between 17.5 - 35 hours per week depending on workload.

From April till July- full time, 5 days out of 7, Mon - Sun; postholder may be required to work additional hours during this period; this will be paid at the normal hourly rate

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Relevant experience in working with young adults ideally in a summer school or similar environment
  2. Demonstrable experience of managing and escalating safeguarding concerns and overseeing the safeguarding activities of others (particularly with young adults)
  3. Experience in managing staff
  4. A high level of emotional resilience and the ability to work calmly under pressure
  5. Strong and demonstrable organisation skills
  6. Clear and accurate communication skills both written and verbal
  7. Able to plan own workload, work to tight deadlines and manage multiple projects, reprioritising or adapting as necessary
  8. Excellent attention to detail and record keeping

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of working with students living in a residential environment
  2. Experience in dealing with international students
  3. First Aid and Mental Health First Aid training
  4. A strong awareness of Health & Safety (specifically as it relates to residential accommodation)
