Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To act as an effective role model and demonstrate effective organisational and leadership skills.
  • To maintain a high profile and be seen to be in charge and fulfil management and clinical responsibilities to patients.
  • To ensure that optimal use is made of available resources to provide appropriate and effective cover over any 24-hour period.
  • To reassess the staffing rotas in the light of unexpected absences and adjust accordingly to meet the needs of the service.
  • To escalate to midwifery management team about activity in the Unit and staffing levels and to ensure that appropriate manpower data is available on an ongoing basis.
  • To assist in orientation programmes and familiarise staff with the organisational and clinical demands of inpatient services.
  • To ensure that all medical and midwifery students are working in a positive learning environment.
  • To carry out on behalf of the HMS, annual staff appraisals of junior midwives and maternity support workers.
  • To create and maintain an effective communication system between all staff groups working in maternity services and to ensure that a positive working environment is achieved.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of post-registration education
  • Degree or relevant experience
  • Teaching and assessing/ mentorship qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Substantial experience of working as a Registered midwife
  • Specific experience of working in the antenatal and postnatal Ward setting.
  • Experience of managing and motivating a team and reviewing performance of the team/ individuals.
  • To have a knowledge / evidence of research/ audit/ quality improvement initiatives. E
  • Management and leadership skills, including an ability to prioritise own work effectively and being able to direct tasks to others
  • Ability to recognise the contributions of all members of the MDT.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Evidence of ability to influence and motivate a team
  • Management and leadership skills, including an ability to prioritise own work effectively and being able to direct tasks to others.
  • Ability to recognise the contributions of all members of the MDT.
  • Computer literate: able to use word, email, excel and manage database.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills, including an ability to respond to sudden unexpected events/ demands.
  • Demonstrates clinical skills in speciality.
  • Demonstrates ability to place women and family at centre of care.
