John Lewis Partnership

John Lewis Partnership

About

We’re the largest employee owned business in the UK and home of our cherished brands, John Lewis and Waitrose. Here, we’re not just employees, we’re Partners, driven by our purpose to build a happier world. As we look to our future, there’s never been a more exciting time to join us.

We’re ruthlessly focussed on being brilliant at retail. We continue to innovate, adapt and diversify. Never Knowingly Undersold on price, quality and service in John Lewis and passionately serving food-lovers in Waitrose.

WE ALL OWN IT

As Partners we all share the responsibility of ownership and in its rewards. We use our voices to contribute to our success, working together through the good and challenging times, holding true to our behaviours and treating everyone with kindness and respect. We also  take ownership of our own growth and development through the support we receive.

We all own making the Partnership somewhere we belong. Embracing our differences and creating an environment where we’re free to be ourselves and can THRIVE. Growing ourselves individually, and as a collective.

As Partners, we make all the difference, and we all own it.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

We’re passionate about creating a workplace where everyone feels like they belong. We celebrate our differences, build diverse teams, and make sure everyone feels valued and included.

We understand that you work at your best when you’re free to be yourself. That’s why we’re proud to be ourselves. It’s a truly inclusive culture, wherever you work in the Partnership.

Our internal networks (more on them below) and our leaders are committed to our ambition to make the Partnership the most inclusive employer in the UK. Helping to ensure everyone has the same opportunity to thrive in their role and progress.

POWERED BY POSITIVE PARTNER NETWORKS

Our internal networks are for Partners, led by Partners. Alongside the support they provide, they also play a key role in shaping our Partnership strategies:

LINKAGES - Our intergenerational or age network aiming to build awareness of the benefits and opportunities of an intergenerational workforce.

WORKING PARENTS - Our Working Parents’ Network supports and inspires working parents throughout their parenting journey.

CARERS NETWORK - The network aims to raise awareness and support Partners who are carers, and their allies.

BENEFITS

We believe in rewarding our Partners for the special contribution they make to the Partnership. Our founder, John Spedan Lewis, was a big advocate for this too. Many of our benefits have been enjoyed by Partners for generations.

Our range of benefits is vast, so you’re bound to find many that suit your personal interests and lifestyle. From discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose to our unique leisure learning fund and much, much more.

Discount: When you’ve been with us for three months, you’ll get Partnership discount in store and online. That’s 25% off in John Lewis & Partners (12% off electrical products, some exclusions apply) and 20% in Waitrose & Partners (some exclusions apply) You’ll also be able to nominate someone you live with to share your discount.

Shared Parental Leave: Shared parental leave allows you to take a flexible approach to deciding when you’ll be away from work after your baby is born or when you adopt or foster to adopt.

Equal Parenthood Leave: Our equal parenthood leave gives all new parents 26 weeks paid leave (14 weeks at full contractual pay and 12 weeks at 50% contractual pay). It’s available for all Partners who’ve worked for the Partnership for one year at the qualifying week or you’re notified of being matched with a child, regardless of how you become a parent. It tops up any statutory maternity leave and pay, statutory paternity pay and leave or statutory adoption leave and pay.

Holiday and Extended Leave: Depending on your Partnership job level, you’ll get between 22 and 30 days holiday a year, plus bank holiday entitlement and an extra time off if you are employed on Christmas day.
All holiday entitlement is pro-rated depending on when you join and how many days you work per week.

Pension and Life Assurance: The Partnership has a defined contribution pension scheme where your contributions, up to an agreed level, will be matched by the Partnership. Our life assurance scheme provides a lump sum benefit, which may be paid to a chosen benefactor in the event of your death.

Flexible Working (Where applicable): Our open approach to flexible working encourages a positive work-life balance. Wherever possible, we want to give our Partners more freedom and control over their working week.

FAQ:

Do I need specific qualifications or recent experience?

Not necessarily. To us, it’s not always about experience and qualifications. Certain roles do require these of course, but those who show passion and willingness to work at their best and take on the responsibilities of a co-owner are just as important.

That’s why our Partnership Behaviours (e.g. In This Together, Owning It and Absolute Clarity) show up throughout our recruitment process and it’s important you learn more about these as you begin to prepare your application.

What support is available for older applicants?

We are a proud signatory of the Age Inclusivity Charter and have partnered with 55/Redefined to:

  • Promote roles to over-50s talent
  • Train hiring teams in age-conscious recruitment
  • Offer flexible working and mid-life career support

The recruitment process is designed to be simple, fair and transparent. It includes:

Top Tips for Interview Preparation:

  • Study the Partnership Behaviours: These are key to how we operate and will be referenced in interviews. You can find out further information on our ‘Being a Partner’ page
  • Use the STAR Method: When preparing the examples, think about the following approach known as the STAR guide.

    • S – Situation: Describe the context or situation you were in. Provide enough detail for the interviewer to understand the scenario.
    • T – Task: Explain the specific task or goal you needed to accomplish within that situation. What were you responsible for?
    • A – Action: Outline the actions you took to address the situation or task. Be specific about what you did, including any skills or techniques you utilised.
    • R – Reflection/ Result: Share the outcome of your actions and the impact it had on you. What happened as a result of your efforts? Include any quantitative or qualitative results, and what you gained from the experience.
  • Practice: Use the published questions to rehearse your responses.
  • Be Yourself: We value authenticity and a genuine interest in the role and the Partnership.
What if I need adjustments during the application process?

We are a Disability Confident Employer and encourage candidates to request reasonable adjustments at any stage. You can indicate this in your application form or contact the Talent Acquisition team directly for support.

What happens if I’m unsuccessful?

Due to high application volumes, we may not be able to provide individual feedback. However, we encourage reapplying for other roles that match your skills and interests.

How do you demonstrate your commitment to age inclusivity?

We have:

  • Signed the Age Inclusivity Charter.
  • Earned the 55/Redefined Accreditation, showcasing our commitment to fair and inclusive hiring practices for older workers.
